I have 3 Delawares and one had pasty butt more than the others and she was tiny - about half the size of the largest one. I named her Midge because of it. Now, at a year old, I can barely tell her apart from the others. I am sure she will catch up!
I am in Connecticut. I have lived here all my life and don't remember ever have temperatures this low!! We had such a warm and beautiful Fall. I really shouldn't complain. Sunday, we were out shoveling snow off our deck and it was sunny and warm - a whopping 40 degrees. It felt then that spring...
No new snow here, just bitter cold! I woke up to -10 degree temperature! Despite the cold, the girls were outside when I went to change their water and bring them treats. Even though I have a waterer inside the coop and on top of a metal heater base, a thin ring of ice formed in the trough. Now...
Since they sometimes stop laying in cold weather because they spend more energy on keeping themselves warm, it also make sense that some of the protein that nutrients that would normally make their eggs stronger would also be used up trying to stay warm. Let's just pray for warmer weather!!
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know! I'm sure they will be fine if they will bundle together at night a little closer than they normally do. I just want to make sure. Thanks, again
Unfortunately, yes!! In the next few days, we are expecting highs in the teens and lows from 0 to -4 without the wind chill. I am going to work from home tomorrow so that I can keep a fire going in the house and make sure the coop doesn't get too cold. The coop has heated roosts and I am tempted...
That is true for me, as well. My GBs are the first to lay EVERY morning and they lay the darkest and largest eggs! And, mine are all very laid back. I have not seen any of them show any signs of aggression toward another chicken. When we expand, I am going to get lots of them!
You're right to hide. Them are fighting words! Lol
Seriously, I hope you escape this winter without snow. Why should we all suffer?
We actually had an incredible fall, and snow is good for the soil, so, I really shouldn't complain. Time goes so quickly. Spring will be here before we know it...
Same! They will go where the straw is and don't venture off, at all. I haven't seen any dust bathing but I imagine they could be doing that under the coop. I blocked off the sides so that no snow would go under there and, with their scratching, I am sure the surface is not frozen. They also...
It's good that I am not alone, or, I should say that my chickens are not alone. But, I guess I need to shovel more. Hopefully, I can get some more done tomorrow before our next storm! Thanks, @pipdzipdnreadytogo for the kick in the butt! ;)
How is everyone doing with the snow? My girls don't mind subzero temps but they are afraid of the white stuff! Lol I have had to shovel portions of their run and put down hay. I even had to sweep off their ramp, otherwise, they would not come out of the coop. Even for treats! Anyone else...
