whats the earliest you have heard crowing??

Well, if I open fired on crowing roos, then I wouldn't have many birds, and probably zero roos. If I stubbed toe jumping up for my gun, then I would spend more than a few minuets (Crying like a baby) on the floor. Been there, done that. This is way to funny to me! Ken

What does Quail taste like? Not sure if I want to try them or not....

I'm with wombat. You may want to try to buy quail and try it before you commit to raising them. You will probably pay through the nose for the meat, but at least you know if you like them or not. Somewhat exotic meats of any kind...(Anything other than chicken, turkey, beef, pork) is a matter...

    What type? and gender?? QUAILS!!!

Well, having no experience with this color cournix I would have guessed female, by speckled breast, and male, by even color breast. My question is....How exactly do people come upon birds of unknown spices by accident? Not busting on anyone, but just curious. BTW...lovely looking birds! Ken

whats the earliest you have heard crowing??

Quote: This is way to funny! News Break. Coturnix quail crow for no apparent reason, and they are very loud! Not the grate on your nerves like a chicken roo crow, but loud and relentless. For no apparent reason. Early for me, 4.5 weeks, early in a 24hour period....All hours of the night and...

    Bedding question

Quote: This is the way I see it. Quail chicks (Bob/CotX) should be able to stand on pretty much any surface at a week old. News paper, and even 1/2" HWC. Over the winter break, I'm going to try to build my version of the $200+ commercial brooder, with 1/2" HWC. If successful, I will line the...

Well, I can't add anything that Shelly hasn't said other than a solder or two, and encouragement. You will do fine! Ken

Problem: Quail Spill Most of Their Food

I 3rd, the flat feeder!!!!!!!!! They just eat the food and scratch on the wire. Also a sand/dust box will solve the second reason they waste food. Ken

    help

Quote: That's really a mute point though. The previous posts mention that the USPS does not guarantee the contents anyways. Well, no. It's not really a moot point. It's very applicable in many cases. Sometimes very good people loose their jobs trying to save people a few bucks on shipping...

YAY! My babies are showing their gender, I think.

Quote: Well, this gets very complicated. If you want want 4 girls on their own producing...logically 4 eggs a day(for eating) , then keep them separate from any breeding stock. If you want breeding stock, then a 1 roo to 3 hen ratio is advised. Your numbers don't add up for me, but I think...

Coturnix egg laying question - how many eggs?

Well, two weeks is way early for egg laying, but at that age they can jump/fly out of a 3+ foot tall brooder. They are crazy fast to mature. I've had some hens sporadically start laying eggs as early as 5.5 weeks old, but a general rule is 8 weeks until daily egg laying, and with all living...

    Slow Night Here In Quailville

Well, as my general assessment, this board is using outdated software, trying to achieve an updated result. Folly in my mind, but apparently people like it, so who am I to criticize? Garbage in, garbage out! That's what I always say. Ken

    help

Quote: If the box is smashed they will pay for it. It does me also. NO THEY WONT INSURE LIVE BIRDS. OR BROKEN EGGS. THEY ONLY ENSURE THAT YOU GET THE BOX--- NOT THE CONDITION OF IT OR THE CONTENTS. AND THEY INSURE THAT YOU GET THE OVERNIGHT BOX IN SOMETHING LIKE 3-5 DAYS--- NOT OVERNIGHT...

    can't tell the difference!

Well, jumbos are just larger selectively bread browns that may have been combined with other strains to create a larger bird. I don't think anyone in the US has anything that could be considered to be...by any stretch of the imagination a "Wild BIRD". I call them small browns, but they have all...

will quial use ramps in cages?

I don't have as much experience as most on the board, but quail (most quail) , tend to like single level "ranch" style accommodations. A split foyer, with loft and basement is over kill. They tend to go to the lowest level and chill. Just build a bigger 1 story pen if you need more space...

Today's the BIG day!!! Good Hatch Vibes Needed!

Actually, you should have stopped turning the quail eggs on day 14. Kullas is right, if you use an auto turner, then you should turn it off and take it out, or you are in for a heartbreak. If you took the turner out on day 14, and/or are hand turning, you should be fine. If your bator temp is...
