I don't remember what age for the last batch, but they were a few weeks old.
This morning, I went into the garage, and two of the six 11 day old chicks were on their tiny training roosts, with the others asleep on the sand floor. I don't know how long they had been there, but it lasted 30...
Number 3 looks like my Olive Eggers (Ideal does a EE/Welsummer cross) and my Welbar (which is Welsummer/Barred Rock cross).
I love that little chipmunk pattern they have.
Yes! My partner has never been around chickens. He still isn't sure what to think of my older two, but he knew chickens were part of the deal with me. Every time he comes in and out of the house, he stops and talks to the chickies (in the garage for now) and checks on them. Because of chicks, he...
I know I'm preachin' to the choir here, but...
*steps on soap box*
The natural instincts of chicks amazes me.
Today, after a week of putting paper towels over the sand to be able to keep track of chick poops and make cleaning a couple of times a day easier, I pulled up the paper towels so...
All of this info is good. I have really started questioning whether I should get a single crested bird. I would hate to set chickens up for failure.
I have a dog that was set up for failure in his first home. (I am his third and forever after being surrendered to the breeder twice.) The first...
My two EE's do not have crests. They are just over 2 years old. The 2 OE's I am assuming do not. I previously had OE's from Ideal and they did not, and the 2 new ones are from Ideal.
The NH's are supposed to be docile, but I have noticed bossiness from them and they are only a week old!
One of...
I would like to get a Cream Legbar. But I only want one in my mixed flock which (once the new ones get integrated) will be 3 New Hampshires, 2 EE's, 2 OE's, and 1 Welbar. I will probably get two White Leghorns at the same time as a Cream Legbar to broody 3 together.
If I only have one crested...
Same. I use sand, and it is so easy to maintain and keep dry. I clean daily raking and sifting. Weekly I use a sifting type shovel and get a deep clean on the entire coop for anything that might have been missed on the daily clean.
No smell. Clean. Dry. Much more hygenic.
I am looking for something to go ahead and give them more room. The coop I have as a brooder coop after their first two or three weeks is too far away from the house, and I'm not sure I could keep it warm enough. Hoping to find an extra large box that gives more room.
I put her back in, and...
Thank you. I am already looking for an alternative brooder.
The brooder has been on the cool side for theor age, already down to ~89° temperature wise, and their behavior otherwise shows comfortable. I thought boredom, or maybe something g set them off about her. I'll put her back and monitor...
How long should I leave this one isolated? I haven't picked her up to examine her, but from just observing, I think the swelling has gone down.
I have noticed a lot of the usual of light pecks at faces and feet by everyone, but none of the really going after a vent like they were to this one...
I have 6 chicks, who are 5 days old. Three New Hampshires, 2 Olive Eggers, 1 Welbar.
This morning, I noticed one of the NH's peck at what I *think* is the Welbar. (The Welbar and OE's looks alike.) I also saw what appeared to be a tiny drop of clear liquid from her vent. I watched them for a...
I knew chicken math was going to get me, and I tried to plan my new coop to account for that, and calculating chickens, ages, etc. It may still get me.
I swore that since I got 6 this fall (I got them 2 days ago) that I would be good and not need to get any until '27. I am looking at a few...
I feed mash every day now. I just let it soak while I am cleaning the coop then feed it. They still have a feeder of regular pellets, but some days they just beak it out, like "what is this trash". Never mind that they ate it long before they ever started getting mash. This morning I had the...
Yes, so I went with the battery since my generator is only on the house, not the barn. I hope someday I can get solar for the barn, then I will convert it to electricity. I like that I have that option. Overall, I am extremely happy with the door.
I ended up getting an Ador1. It was between it, and one other. I had questions about both, and emailed both companies. Ador emailed me back with detailed information, that answered all of my questions and even gave me options for how to handle different things. The other company never replied...
