Switching to Ducks from Chickens questions

Hi I've had hens for a few years now. I keep them in tractors (one is 4'x8', one is 5'x8' and the last is 4'x16') I have a total of 9 chickens in them. Chickens are great for eggs. Sure. I have a/an egg eater in the big tractor, which has 4 hens in it. I also have had several go broody on...

    Leghorn chicks question

So for 4H I hatched out some Leghorns (we had only 5 hatch out of 12). Of course, they are all fluffy yellow and adorable. Some of them have a reddish spot on the back of their heads. Does this mean anything? I also had one chick hatch out of an egg from an easter egger roo and RIR hen...

Still air, temp fluctuations, help please

Another update. So I let the humidity drop and the temp went up to 102... this happened overnight and I'm not sure how long this went on for. I left the lid off for a bit and candled a couple eggs. Still kicking around, so I hope that's a good sign! Yipes! I was tryign to get the humidity...

Still air, temp fluctuations, help please

Tthought I'd give an update. FINGERS CROSSED... I have the temp stable, one thermometer says 100, the other 102, so I'll call it a draw and average it, saying we're good to go! Candled the eggs, started with 12. 2 were yolkers and one was a quitter. Two eggs are so dark brown we couldn't...

    Candling overdue eggs

I called the manufacturer and the lady was not really of much help. She said "keep playing with it." Hope you can get better information than I did! I won't ever be volunteering to do this project again! I stayed up till 2am last night babysitting the incubator because it spiked to 103...

    Candling overdue eggs

I'm also using a LG still air incubator for our 4H project (was kindof saddled with this project= since I have chickens it must mean I wan to hatch eggs!) I've had horrible temp fluctuations. I finally got it to stabilize at 99-100 (according to a digital thermometer, but the original glass...

Still air, temp fluctuations, help please

Thank you for the help. I was able to stop the wild temperature swings, using a pliers to adjust the knob a tiny amount. This thing is crazy sensitive. It's been hovering around 99-100 the last couple days, although I do have 2 other thermometers in there that each have different readings...

Still air, temp fluctuations, help please

yes, it's a squarish circlish element. I have 3 thermometers in there... one that came with it (hard to read, the numbers are faded) hovers around 90-110 LOL, The meat thermometer jammed into the styrofoam reads anywhere from 100-110, and the digital thermometer that is in the center of the...

Still air, temp fluctuations, help please

Still air, temp fluctuations, help please

So I was 'volunteered' by our 4H club to incubate eggs for the embryology project. (because I have hens I guess this means I might "like" hatching eggs... ugh) The club gave me a Little Giant still air incubator. I had it set up for 18 hours when we were told to go pick up eggs. (we were...

KHoward what are you seeing that makes you think rooster? He/she has not crowed or strutted or anything remotely roostery yet. I guess time will tell

    What do we think now?

Here she is today 17.5 weeks old!! I think this one is a pullet and not a cockerel!! She did a mini molt these last few weeks and dropped all her black tail feathers and here he/she is now. What do we think?

Where do I put food in the tractor?

In our 4 season tractors, the food is under the roost/coop, protected from the rain. The waterers are chicken nipple style hanging out in the opposite end of the run. Hope this helps, we love our tractors :) Would love to see pics of yours. Mine is in the avatar.

I'm pretty sure she's a RIR pullet, but at 6 weeks what the heck is with the size of her comb and wa

I got mine from MPC too and ended up with with what most people think is a room (Speckled Sussex) but has me confused still, even at 13 weeks LOL. I'm holding out!! Drat! I would definitely hold out till he crows or you get an egg, but that is a prett darn tall comb for his age.

Show us your nest boxes! Ingenous design post it here!

I have two of these 4 season tractors, and here are the next boxes. The first pic is of the nest boxes in closed position. I can lift just the top lid, and it has a hook/eye to hold the lid open while I gather eggs (haven't gotten any eggs yet, but soon!). ON cleaning day, I can drop the nest...
