I always use play sand covered with paper towels for the first couple of days. Its way easier to keep clean than pine shavings IMO. I made a pooper scooper with a wire hanger bent to shape and attached window screen. I have little problem with pasty butt. Chickies love to dust bathe in thhe sand...
Following this thread-I'm at 6900' and dry in Flagstaff, AZ. Working on and tweaking an incubator and waiting for my reliable good mama to go broody so I can give her whatever chicks I hatch so I don't have to do another brooder this year. I'll be doing local barnyard mix eggs and will probably...
I'm still in the tweaking stage with my homemade incubator so definately no expert, but thats what I bought just the other day for mine- In researching it all on here others have done the same. I haven't had a chance to break it out and test it yet-trying to get finished up on some work before I...
And a new development-last night went out to candle the eggs and when I put the eggs back under the non wandering one she just got up and left the nest and hung out in the cage... So I put ther eggs under broody #3... I really figured that since I don't NEED (have way too mnay chickens) these...
I have 2 broody chickens in side by side nest boxes that are up high. I set eggs under them last Weds. Since the boxes are up high and in an attempt to keep the others hens out of the broodies' hair (feathers!), I set up a cage outside of their boxes with food and water and some room to move...
Maybe-didn't see her on the nest-or maybe she's getting ready to or maybe thats as far as she's gonna go.Don't want her to be broody just wondering why she's running around half naked!
Hi!!!
Sorry to hear about your loss. We here in Flagstaff can relate to your loss. Amazing how attached you can get to the little darlin's! We're in mourning here about Bryson's beloved rat who dies last week.
Hope all is well beyond all this. Miss ya

I live at high altitude and we had a couple of nights this winter in the negative teens- no heat and an open pop door. I fretted but the (adult) girls were fine. I do have chickens that are said to do well in the cold.
I have a just-under-a-year-old (hatchery) Wesummer that has quite a bare belly and it has been that way for a couple of weeks. She isn't sitting on a nest except to lay and seems otherwise fine and not acting broody. I checked for mites. Her belly skin looks fine-not red, inflamed or anything...
I like play sand-really easy to scoop up the poop (made a sieve cleaner out of wire and screen) and keep it clean. Ready made grit for the babies. Last year using only sand had NO pasty butt and I'm thinking it had to do w/ the the sand. I could then throw the sand from the brooder into the run...
Where in AZ are you? In Northern Arizona, Olsens (several stores in various towns) will have silkies. Here is a link to their homepage and you can see lists from each store of what they plan on getting in and which days. Some stores (if not all) are getting silkies...
I use the deep litter method and I finally cleaned it all out after a year. By that time it had just started to smell a bit ammonia-y and I just thought a year was well past time. I think I'll try to do it twice a year from now on since it took a long time to shovel out all those pineshavings...

Flagstaff is really awesome I admit-however when I was digging all that snow out of the chicken run this winter Tucson was looking pretty good for a while If only I had the money and flexibility to have a desert home and a mountain home and we could move w/ the seasons!

I'm fairly new to chickens but think it makes sense- Our average 1st day of below freezing temps at night is usually early to mid Sept. Average last day of frost is like June 7-but we had it down to 36 just the other night at my house......
