👀 BLUE Eyed chickens discussion 💬

:frow:oldNow that I have a blue eyed 2 month old chicken (who I expected to have brown eyes) I am stumbling on the realization that out of the thousands of chickens I’ve owned over the years, I’ve never had such a chicken with Blue eyes. Further research tells me it’s because it’s supposed to be...

Black Jersey Giant with BLUE eyes?? 👀

Have had JG’s for years. I got these JG chicks from Hoover hatchery to refresh my flock…..this is the first I’ve ever seen with blue eyes. All mine have always had brown. Even my blue and splash JG’s have brown eyes. Anyone ever seen this before?

My male turkey is being mean to my gander. What should I do?

i know this is an older post, but i wanted to say that your gander isnt mean now, but they will become aggressive during breeding season, and can kill other birds (large or no). That was my only thing here, we separate breeding pairs and trios, even from their own (all goose) flock, because it...

Fencing for emus… is welded wire sufficient?

ok, i see what youre saying. the fenced pen they will be in is the 1/4 acre. If they had access to the rest of the acreage, id say thats enough for sure. Keep in mind when theyre little tiny they dont need that much acreage yet, its more for older emus to be able to run. So youd have time to...

Fencing for emus… is welded wire sufficient?

the material is fine, just NO barbed wire, its the height that is an issue. My emu were jumping 4' and 5' fencing at 6 months old. Theyve since grown more. Its typically advised to have at LEAST 6' fencing also... 1/4 acre is small for emu. They really do need at least an acre, if not more, to...

Celadon birds are total jerks? Common?

I had the same issue with mine . But ive found that all my standard sized quail (ive had most colors, too) have been overly aggressive (fights, killing each other). I know aggression in quail is fairly common, and was ready to give up for a bit, but ive had MUCH better success with my...

New Hampshire X Jersey Giant breeding experiment

I only was able to get a few eggs from my NH female, and none of them hatched. I'm going to try again in October, so I will def repost then! I can also make updates as they grow up, and start laying. Im curious to see if they end up excellent layers like my NH. But to be fair, I get 5-6 eggs a...

    Guinea Hatch-along!

Here’s a color update for the lavender x violet babies. They’re all the same colors- multicolored, but they’re still pretty small so I’ll update again once they’re adults. Ignore the pide lavenders, they’re from my white x lavender pair…. Theyre not Pearl gray, there are many colors going on...

    Chick Promixity

Depends on your chickens. Each chicken will have a different personality, believe it or not, and each breed is different. There are certian breeds that are typically pre-disposed to being “friendlier” than others, and some chickens that frankly will never be friendly to humans. This is coming...

    REALLY aggressive broody hen

Broodies can be like that. She may be hungry & want food. My current broody has small babies and she will go after me to get me to feed them out of cycle (we don’t free feed our birds). Just a thought. If it’s not food, it’s likely that she is just ultra protective of her eggs and chicks. But...

    My "So Called Gander!"

I’m surprised nobody’s said that it’s very common for pilgrim ganders to sit on a nest of eggs. This is actually one of the main reasons that I’ve seen, that ppl want to keep pilgrims. Broody males. They’re also notoriously excellent fathers. I’d listen to JRies and get that DNA test just to be...

    Electric poultry netting with emu?

Ok, thanks. That’s what we were thinking might happen but I was just wondering if anyone had experience at all with it

    Electric poultry netting with emu?

Hey all! :wee So we’re getting in our shipment of thanksgiving turkeys soon and we wanted to do them inside of electric poultry netting (premier 1), BUT they’ll be co located and moved around our emus 3 acre pasture. And we were thinking this could be a safety hazard, but we were also wondering...

Book of Geese by Dave Holderread

Yeah! They’re territorial, and they don’t like anything “unknown” in their territory. That does include new animals to the farm, new birds, baby birds, etc. So it can be a hassle introducing new animals into an area with an existing emu mob

Book of Geese by Dave Holderread

When I think of “guard geese” I really think more of “alert geese” & “deterrent geese”. I’ve seen hawks swerve and fly away due to our geese size and the flock movement (I have 11 geese), which has def been a deterrent to some areal predators in our areas. Our chickens can and have used the...
