Thank you!!
It is a very niche sport, I barely ever meet anyone else who sails! I mostly teach on lasers but my sister and I LOVE taking out the big sailboat out after work for a few hours.
Very happy to report that Alassë is now back out with the flock :) she is still a bit unsteady on her feet but she can jump up onto the roosting bars and go up the ramp at night. A big improvement from not being able to stand at all! Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions/advice!
She is able to stand now, and I often find her standing rather than laying down. She doesn’t have much interest in eating but does not seem particularly sluggish/lethargic. She will drink. I’ve been giving her warm water mixed with nutridrench and she will drink it from a dropper. Her breathing...
I lanced the spot and felt air coming out! So I guess she must have a ruptured air sac, I’ll keep a close eye on it and lance it again if needed. She is still not really eating but I may try bringing her outside tomorrow and bringing another one of my hens over and see if some competition for...
I have sterile needles that I could use. It definitely feels like there could be air or fluid in there. I will check again in the morning and see if she’s still breathing labored, if so I will try to release the air.
I was checking over her back and her feathers are coming out like crazy around this one specific area, and the difference in skin color is very noticeable. I can’t tell if the area is just swollen, it feels like there may be blood under the skin. I found some spots that could be puncture wounds...
I have tried to look for bruising/wounds, I can look more closely though.
I have nutridrench that I can mix with some warm water, she seems to be drinking on her own when she wants to though. She is eating very little. I have tubed in the past but I’ll probably stick to the syringe for now...
It has been 24 hours and she is still breathing heavily and sitting very quietly. I gave her a little nutridrench in her water as well.
And yes, it is ready, don’t worry
Hey everyone! It has been a *while* since I’ve posted on here
After 8 years of keeping chickens we had our first fox attack yesterday in BROAD DAYLIGHT. Unfortunately our dogs were not outside and we didn’t realize the fox was in the chicken yard until it had killed a bird already (it ran off...
I used to have this happen quite a bit with my previous rooster. It looks like his spur tore into her side when mating, it can look pretty bad with muscle and whatnot exposed but don’t panic! Rinse the wound with a saline rinse (put the mix in a ziploc and cut a hole in the corner if you don’t...
I’ve personally found that the friendliest breeds are buff Orpingtons and Colombian Rocks. Between the two Colombian Rocks win though! All the hens I’ve had of that breed were lap birds who loved to be petted and held.
I have a maran x Cochin named Uriah who is the sweetest boy ever. He isn’t a fan of being pet/picked up but he RUNS to follow me wherever I go in the pen. On top of that he’s beautiful and adorable. A good way to find a sweet rooster is to go on Facebook and look for roosters who need homes...
I had a rooster that this happened to. My sister was raising her foot to prevent him from rushing her at the same time he pecked and the combined force broke his upper beak. Oh it looked so so painful. I clipped the dangling piece off and rubbed Neosporin with pain killers on the exposed quick...
Lice have been so not fun :/ they’ve had it twice in the last few months, coop cleaning and permethrin spray are my best fiends! Also the rooster I took from a lady who had too many last year has respiratory issues that I can’t seem to make go away, he’s had antibiotics once or twice. I just...
We went on vacation and due to a misunderstanding with the chicken sitter there were 10 eggs left under a broody hen, so we had a bit of an accidental bunch of chicks. Over the course of the 3 weeks we had 4 eggs break but thankfully they were not developing. We have two chicks out in the coop...
