Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi all- Haven't been here in a long time, but I am staying close to home these days as my husband had open heart surgery a few weeks ago, and saw that Raz is headed there too. Taprock was right when she said planned heart surgery beats emergency surgery. It was a shock for him to find out he had...

Glad- The best peony trick I know is to lift them. They only want an inch or so of soil covering their eyes. I have had good luck doing this in the fall. Can you believe we are getting a TSC in our little county?

I sent one directly to their website and passed it on. I hope all the attention is keeping them busy.

I was listening to a robin this morning and feeling real sorry for it - hard to get a worm out of the snow!

I might have the name wrong, but it is when the yolk goes the "wrong way" and causes problems, much as being egg bound. I found the info here last summer when I was having the problem, but don't seem to find it now in a quick look.

Lady- When I had a chicken acting like that I think she had egg periodontitis. I hope that is not what yours has, as I finally had to put her down. Good luck.

Thank you Raz for all your work regarding the changes to GAAMP. I have contacted the board member in Traverse City. mrcrush- my chickens go out in all weather, but the snow came down fast today and they all went back to the coop. The last time our power went out (a few weeks ago), a ground fault tripped on one switch in the basement and when power came back on, the freezer did not. We lost all our venison and my DH's salmon spawn. So I can relate. I seem to like those things too. I believe originally some places banned...

Another suggestion for front loaders besides using VERY little soap (yes, a tablespoon at most) is to use Borax (20 mule team). Plus it cleans the clothes better and it is very good at eliminating man and fish odors.

My DH made a box out of the metal that you would use for ductwork and wired a lightbulb inside. I put a large plastic waterer on it year round, as it keeps water off the floor, but just plug it in when it gets cold. It's just enough heat to keep the water thawed, but not too hot to melt the plastic.

I was wondering the same thing- we have added a new garden spot and are prepping it now. I was thinking that we had better wait until all the fencing is up before adding lime. I can just see all the girls in there eating it up.

I haven't seen it yet, but I feel like an idiot because I submitted a recipe for Quiche and forgot the caramelized onions.

Whats the weirdest thing your chickens have eaten or tried to eat??

Cat food is the favorite by far. I don't even keep any on the porch anymore, but every morning when they get let out, there is still a stampede over there to see what might be left. I have seen a couple "keep away" games with baby mice too.
