Hi,
Coturnix will require 1 square foot per bird, so a cage 2ft X 2ft will hold 4 birds correctly. A cage 2ft X 2½ft is 5 square feet so five birds.
I don't always follow this rule though. In the hight of the breeding season I might add one or two more to a 4 or 5 square foot cage to make...
Hi,
I often move birds from one pen to another for breeding purposes and to date nothing has happened to any bird.
My method is, use the wire cage from an old bird cage. Simply place the new bird in the cage in which pen you want, with food and water. Move the cage around once or twice per day...
Hi,
Crossing Normal (Brown) with a white bird will produce Normal chicks. These chicks will be carring the white gene and will produce a number of white chicks in the next generation.
If you get white chicks in the first generation this means your Normal male is carrying white.
Crossing Gold...

Hi,
If you have just started with the 16 hours lighting programme, they should start laying between 10-14 days later.
Crossing Browns with Golds will give you a ratio of 2 golds and 1 brown as the Golds are only semi dominatant over browns.

Hi,
Most white coloured birds have some kind of colour on them, Mainly on their heads and backs.
You can also get normals (Browns) that have white feathers in their plumage, and by selective breeding you could in theroy get mottled birds after a few generations.

Hi,
There is only one species of Japanese quail Cotunix japonica but they do come in many varieties of colours.
No matter what colour they are, they will breed together, for example, Texas A&M X Brown will produce pure cotunix quail.
In the States there are a number of different colours...
Hi,
The annual moult lasts approx 6 weeks, in this time adult birds will lose all their feathers and regrow them. Normally the first to come out are the flight feather which take the longest to grow back.

Hi JJMR794,
No affence taken, I know it'll all in good fun mate lol.
Yes, I understand different counties have different names, you use yours, I use mine. It can be confusing at times, but I'm leaning slowly lol.

Hi,
As far as I know, Albino of any species have red eyes and no colour pigments, if your bird has black eyes and white then thats what you got, not an albino.
I recently bred a red eyed white bird, that is not a albino as when it gets older has coloured patches. I expect I could breed out the...
Ok, so first of all, what is "range"? Or Platinum?
Hi fancyfowl4ever,
As most folks know, there are different names for varieties in different counties, very confusing at times, I know.
Here in the UK, a range is called Tibetian in the USA, a more solid coloured bird.
Platinum is a variety...
Hi Shelleyd
lol, your photo's are good, I now see what you mean. Again it's a case of confusion over names of the varieties.(I'm learning slowly the terms you use in the USA, lol) Here in the UK they are called Cinnamon range or red range, both the same bird.
I would still use the gold fawn...
Hi Shelledy,
You should get some nomal fawn by crossing them with cinnamons, use a gold fawn male over cinnamon hens. You won't get many as you know it's a 2-1 ratio on the golds but there is a chance you might get one or more.
Red-goldens, thought they were the same as Cinnamons?

Hi,
The lightest coloured chicks is known in the UK as a silver (normal feathered pattern) If you can get this in to the range, and then cross it with the white A&Ms you have, then after a few generation you will get the platinum/silver tuxedos. But it takes time and selection of the birds to...
Hi,
Blue coturnix? Can you post a photo please?
The nearest to a "blue" with stripes is a variety called Platinum, but I wouldn't say they were blue, more light gray.
You can get them in range birds too, again more like a gray colour.

Hi,
The first photo is of a Gold in normal colour. (Female)
The second is also a gold in fawn colour (Male?)
With most quail of this species in normal pattern (non range or whites) You can sex them by the chest marking. Females are very spotted while males are a chesnut colour and plain.
You...
Hi,
The nearest to a solid grey quail I've bred is a Platinum Range, they tend to have a slight rusty tinge to the breast feathers. This is in the Uk, so I'm not sure if this variety is available in the States yet.

Hi,
Cotunix start laying from 6 weeks old to begin with.
Last year I did a trial with 26 hens. I started with 6 week old pullets on 1st Jan, trial ended 31st Dec.
In this time the average egg number per bird was 267 eggs lay in that year. Lights were provided during winter so they continued...
