Ocellated turkeys are from down toward mexico. As far as i know, they are mainly a wild breed. It will be very rare, and a very hefty price to get some eggs of these guys.
if it is coccidiosis, and your tom is still alive, isolate him. You can always try to treat him, but im not to sure of his chances of living if he is this far into it, i'm afriad. I'd ask your verterinarian. Most don't know much about birds, but they should all know about coccidiosis. So ask...
My first thought was she prolasped. If she is at laying age, it might be from pushing an egg out to hard, causing everything to prolaspe out through her vent. Its happened at lot in chickens that I can tell, but also happens in turkeys. But if your tom is doing it to... my best educated guess...
It could be stress from moving, or not having their old buddies. I think it is from the moving, since there is two, they should be find and not stress about the other 6. They should be back to normal in a couple days once they get accustomed.
Agreeing partly with Tunastoppper. Any heritage breed bird will not be as beautiful, filled out, or contain as much white meat breast as a BBW, or BBB. But at 6months he should be just fine toeat. If you have a few weeks, make sure he is getting a lot of feed with high protein. My turkey's feed...
What I raised was the BBW turkeys and Cornish X chickens, both breeds are the more "superior" and fast growing of the two birds.
BBW turkeys will grown from poult to (tom) 35lbs, (hen) 25lbs in 18weeks with turkey grower and high protein. Any heritage breed will take a lot longer to grow. My...
It depends on the way you look at it, but sadly, I'd have to say it's more economical to raise chickens for consumption. The get a better rate of grain per pound than turkeys and are mature in half the time to get a decent turkey. You could raise 2 batches of twenty meat birds (raise 20 birds to...
Please post a photo. For a year and a half yr old turkey hen thats a BBB, it seems unrealistic for that weight. Expectually on 22% protein, she should at least be high 20's to 30's. To me it sounds like you have a Standard Bronze if she is really 1 and half years old, or like Olive Hill said, a...
for me, it depends on the type of the birds. my meat birds i try to restrict their feed some with something that looks like Dogfish's feeder. I'd rather have a slower growing meat bird that doesn't get free choice than get issues to fast such as stressed and crop issues. for my heritage birds I...
By the sounds of it to me, it was just a 'freak accident' and you are lucky you saved her I don't think there should be anything wrong. They usually are waddling when they get that weight. I hope it doesn't happen agian, but to me your birds are healthy. I dont see any reason why they would...
By the looks of the picture the Snooded one is a definate hen. Also by the way you describe her as smaller in size, and a smaller more femine head.
The non-snooded one i would say is a tom. You said he is larger in size, and thats what caught my attention. Also formt he pictures you can tell his...
I've had turkeys "flip" over due to stress before. One, just got back from fair and was stressed and was heavyweight,(over 50lbs) and he has a sezuire and actually flipped over and died. Ive had one that was a very weak bird. and you would walk him a bout 10minutes and his face turned blue and...
We had a boar and he was very aggressive about his territory. As long as they are well behaved, and agreeing with Olive Hill, They should be adults, I can see it turning out back with little poults. Also, make sure the mini-pigs cannot get into the turkey feed. Expectually medicated turkey feed...
we usually have birds that dress out about that big. We also ask the butcher to cut it in half, but you can always do it urself. Birds these size rarely fit in the oven, and take many many many long hours of cooking whole. They usually get to done on the outside by the time the inside is at the...
free ranging is absolutely fine. All my competition market birds for state fairs and such are more free ranged. They are in am open pen with free choice food. but they r usually out in the yard than eating their food. 15lbs is absolutely fine and since u still gor 4 weeks they will be perfect...
For mt BBWs they weighed in at 32 lbs about, at 12 weeks. Course, BBB are generally smaller and slower growing at this point, so it wouldn't hurt to say they are in their 20's for toms, and anywhere form 12-17 lbs for hens. It really depends on what you are feeding them. Higher protein, fast...
Was the tylan administered by water? I'm not sure if it would have an effect on them, but maybe too much medication given? Its only a few grams of tylan per 5 gallons of water. Just a thought, though i don't know if it would have killed them, or even that quickly.
My guess is if you are feeding 20% protein feed, they are going to get fairly large, since that is what I feed my fair BBWs. I have had birds weigh in at 58lbs when they approached almost 25 weeks. We havn't been able to butcher the birds as whole birds for years, becuase by the time they get...
At 22 weeks. those birds should be fairly large, almost like 46 pounds and more. at 18 weeks, mine were 42.5, of course it depends on if you have the bronze or the whites. whites tend to get a little larger/require less time to get large. What we do to add fat, is a week or two before your...
