Yeah, I was really hoping that bay was a black sex link of sorts and the fact that it hatched out all black with no white markings meant female.
I think Chooks4life is right, only time will truly tell on this one.... Sounds like everyone is having bad hatch luck this summer.
Maybe I will wait...
Good point Bobbies chick. :D I haven't picked her up lately, but she seems to be in good health and was laying eggs up until the other day...
It would be a shorter cycle with the shipped day old chicks, hopefully that won't cause her to reject them.
Oh no! It was fun watching her hatch them...
Well my broody BO who hatched out the four barnyard mix chicks at the beginning of June is at it again.....she hasn't moved from the nest box all day.
And just as I am placing an order for day old sexed female chicks!
Apparently, the four she hatched are turning out to be all cockerels!! :rant...
Is this rule fairly close to 100% accurate? Does it hold true even for barnyard mixes?
It sounds like a bad year for hatching pullets : (
100% roosters is just about the worst
Based on the input I have received here I think I will separate these boys out from my laying hens and raise them as...
Thanks for taking the time to explain all of that, chooks4life.
I was looking at Austrlorps online and saw that they can have a greenish sheen to their feathers. Maybe Bay is a NH roo x Austrlorp mix instead of NH x BR?
I will keep you posted as s/he develops. Thank you again for your help.
Oh ok.... I was pretty sure she was a black sex link and had no white markings on her head or anywhere else at hatch.... Do you think this could just be a variation on some red breakthrough on a black sex link pullet?
I'm so bummed out I'm online buying sexed day old chicks right now.... This...
I really hope you are joking.....she has almost no comb....I realize the wattles appear dark red, but I had to adjust the exposure of the pic due to the fact that pictures of her always come out way underexposed.
:hit please say it isn't so
So, on a whim I emailed the breeder to see what she thought might have happened.
Her response, althought brief explains a lot. She said "Cochin".
So now I have a very handsome Blue Cochin Cockerel for sale or trade. He is 9 weeks old.
Thanks for all of the input!
Well, here are my three 9 week old cockerels and the lonely little pullet. What a terrible rooster/hen hatch ratio... 50/50 my aunt fanny.....
So, now I have a beautiful Blue Cochin Cockerel (I checked with the breeder I got the eggs from) for sale or trade:
A New Hampshire Cockerel I...
I recently noticed that 'Freckles' has green legs! From what I was able to find online that means it is likely an EE and that the coloring might give us a clue to the gender more so than the comb? Any guesses?
Hi there Mon27. I have to say I agree with RoosterCrow,HensDeliver in that my little lavender chick is actually blue and a roo! As you can see, mine started quite light and has really darkened over the past 5.5 weeks.
Do you have any pics of your chick?
I have to upload my latest pics and will...
Thanks Abserbean, I hope so, too!
The red one has feathered out fastest of all four chicks, so maybe I will hold out hope that it is a pullet.
The top hen in our flock is our only NHR, so maybe they are just both bossy reds!
Thank you for taking a look! I'm super sad about the possibility of having a 3:1 roo to hen ratio on this hatch.
The little red and black chicks feathered out at the same rate, so initially thought that they were the two hens.
Lately, however, the blue and red chicks have been squaring off with...
Thank you for your thoughts. I'm sad to say he can't stay here and once he crows he goes
....OR maybe I will win the lottery before that happens and can move out to some land where roosters can stay. I can dream I suppose.
I do agree that it will be much easier to find a home for him since...
