    I was constantly running through a patch of them. Nothing more than the initial pain of being stuck and then pulling them out.

    Mules actually. My dad had two that he plowed with. Along with 30 to 40 head of cows usually. There was always something around for a barefoot boy to step in. The most damaging being what we call goatheads.
