I have a few more acorn squash developing so I’m thinking I may actually harvest some before the cold weather sets in. Temperatures for the next 2 weeks mud 60’s to 70’s. Fingers crossed.
Definitely SM in there. I’ve been growing them for years. This year’s crop is pretty much a loss. But the few that are pulling through look great. They’re naturally sweeter than Romas.
The rain stopped late last night. Total rainfall a hair over 3 inches. Picked more green beans this morning. The rain appears to have given the garden a bit of a boost. I should get a few more small summer squash, some bok choi and red leaf lettuce. I may even get an acorn squash if I’m lucky...
Still raining. Last time I looked the rain gauge was up to 2.5 inches. I picked more green beans this morning and my first SM tomato. Also picked kale. I have 3 tiny acorn squashes developing. The weather is still on the warm side for the next 10 days but I’m not sure if frost blankets will keep...
No rain in the forecast, although the weather folks we will get some this coming week. It’s going to drop into the low 40’s overnight so I picked my little yellow squash. Also picked a pound of green beans yesterday and another pound of oversized green beans this morning. I absolutely despise...
I forgot to mention that my giant daisy bush is full of buds. I’m hoping it actually blooms this year. It has overtaken my BES shrub so I will replant that next Spring.
I turned the remaining apples from my tree into applesauce. Only 3 1/2 half pint jars. I had previously made 4 cups of cooked apples with the early ones that fell off the tree. Not too bad for the very first harvest.
I did a little fertilizing and hand watering this morning. The yellow squash did get a little bigger so that’s a hopeful sign. Seasonally warm temperatures for the next 10 to 12 days but little rain in the forecast. We really need rain. I started mowing the backyard yesterday. I’ll finish that...
I opened my first jar of peach jam I made the first few days in September. It was not as thick / jelled as I would like but the flavor was like biting into a fresh sweet peach. So good.
I wouldn’t go that way. I really prefer to use local sources for canning stuff. But I am really excited about making apple cider jelly. I’m sure the flavor has to be more intense using cider as the base.
I went to Bj’s a couple of weeks ago to stock up on tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. That was to replace what I should have harvested. While I was re-arranging my canned goods cabinet I did a little inventory. I still have 4 jars of green tomato salsa verde and 3 jars of regular salsa leftover...
That’s amazing. So no straining required. We’re going to have our family apple picking day in late September. I’ve been wanting to make apple jelly but the whole straining the apple skins and bits seems too labor intensive to me. I only buy fresh apple cider from the orchard we go to. Thanks...
It took me a while to catch up on this thread. Our weather has been nice, low to mid 70’s during the day and 50’s at night. Although very dry. I’m still getting green beans every other day. The bok choy I planted in the big garden is doing well. The lettuce is growing slowly. My summer squash...
I picked another big handful of green beans this morning, an orange tomato to finish ripening in the kitchen and my first zucchini. It was still small but I’m thinking the summer squash aren’t loving the cool overnight temperatures we’ve been getting. It was 45F at 6:30 am when I took the dogs...
