Dang, I'm bummed. I lost that last chick. It was trying to get out of the he shell and I thought it was fine. It was taking awhile, so I thought I might have to help it. Ibwas taking care of my grand baby and hubby was working and would be heading home soon so and I figured if it wasn't out of...
I'm sorry. I hope the rest of the hatch goes well. I had 3 hatch 2 days early, then 7 1 day early and one left that hadn't pipped. I was not sure if it was gonna hatch or not. When I candled I was pretty sure it was viable, but not 100% sure since it was a really dark egg and I couldn't see...
Yah, it's really hard to be a mama chicken, huh? I wish I had a broody hen right now, but all my broody girls have lived out their lives and passed. That's why Ibhad ordered some Banty eggs, sad they weren't fertile. Anyhow...the fuzzy butt count this morning is up to 4 and 4 pipped! I was glued...
Well, I started with more than 10...18 total. I bought 2 sets of eggs from 2 different sellers on Ebay. 6 bantam-frizzle mix and 12 black copper maran mixes. All 6 bantam eggs were not fertilized. 1st candling showed clear eggs. What a bummer. Then I had 2 quitters out of the 12 other eggs, so...
Hello there...yep, I've got 10 due to hatch on Friday. Hope it goes ok, these were shipped eggs and I've got some saddle air cells. All were live yesterday at last candling so I've got my fingers crossed!
Well...I got up this morning and my silkie mama was squawking like crazy and I could hear her all the way up to the house. She was not by the chicks...they were all huddled together and she was protesting being in that pen with them and being forced to be a broody mama! Well...now I know...at...
Oops...hit submit on accident! As I was saying...otherwise you risk her getting off the nest and not hatching the other eggs. I have also put chicks under a hen that just went broody a day or two...just remove eggs and put chicks under her and bingo! Instant mama! Tonight I did something I've...
Hello everyone! I thought I'd chime in since today I just received 11 chicks that I ordered and planned on putting them under my broodiest hen. My best and only broody hens are my silkie and silkie mixes. They are really awesome mamas. I have put day old chicks all the way up to two-week old...
Happyhenfarm...If you can, get rid of anything wood. The mites take refuge in the wood roosts, nest boxes etc. I put down some cedar chips mixed in with the pine chips...bugs don't like cedar. I made plastic nests out of crates...and hubby is putting in metal roosts for me in the coop this week...
Hello again,
I haven't been on here in awhile. Yes, I have wormed with Valbazen. Did about a year ago...and just used ivomec/eprinex for worms and external parasites this week. I've never used that before but read god things about it. I dust my coop, nests, roosts and run regularly with...
Thank you all for the reply's on my post. I haven't been on in awhile. I had to shoot a hen last week--first time I had to kill one of my chickens. I just couldn't stand to see her suffer and starve. I used a 410. Not sure that was the best choice. I just didn't want to use 12 or 20 gage cuz I...
Yeah...I agree with the free ranging of the chickens too Shellz. I do the same thing almost all year long. Got 10 acres and they stay pretty protected between our lower fenced goat pasture and our house on the bottom 5 acres. Got three dogs that patrol and they keep a good lookout. To each their...
I agree with you Shellz...wild animals need to be wild and live in the wild. I never rehabilitated any of the wild animals ( I do have a friend that does that though-licensed) and I don't have a problem with people rehabilitating them if it's done right and they are not turned into pets and then...
I've got the same problem right now--normally I don't ever see bugs--only saw lice once and became really good about dusting after that. But...in the last couple weeks, I noticed some of my girls have a messy fluff, missing feathers around their necks and heads and aren't laying as much...
...myself. They do what they do...they are opportunists and if I had done what I know I should have--I wouldn't have lost my 4 chickens. I'm the dumba**! Needless to say, I've been closing the chickens up in the coop at night so they're not up and outside wandering around for the predators to...
Thanks for your advice. My girl passed yesterday afternoon :( I just hope she is resting in peace now. I hope my other chickens don't have to go through what she did. As of yesterday they all seemed healthy so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks again everyone.
