EE colouring / plumage - chicks vs/ adults --- Post your PICS!

Two of my EEs ended up being roosters. They are still young, but so far they are nice. One is very sweet. The other is a little more skittish. He doesn't like to be picked up, but will come sit on my lap if I wait for him.

Can a chicken eat too much sand?

I've had others on the hay with no problems, but I guess there's always "that one" problem chick. The vet was really good about it. I was worried originally if she would even do the surgery, and how much it would cost. She was a little hesitant about doing it, but told me $25. In the end she...

Can a chicken eat too much sand?

I took her to the vet for surgery. I felt bad for her and didn't want to wait any longer to see what happened. She is healing up now and doing great! The Vet said it was a big mass of hay that was in there. Hopefully she doesn't do that again.

Can a chicken eat too much sand?

I have a young chick, about 4-5 weeks old, separated from the rest because she has an impacted crop. She had a hay bedding that I think she may have eaten that caused the impacted crop. Now she is on just sand and she is eating it, a lot of it. Is this good for her or will it cause more...

    Impacted crop?

I have done some searching, and read about using oil or water down the throat, but I'm worried I wouldn't do it right and would drown the little chicken. I have tried to massage it but it's very uncomfortable for her. She was on hay before sand, so I think she must have eaten it. That's the only...

    Impacted crop?

She did not have grit before, but now she is on only sand, since I separated her from the others. I'm pretty sure it is impacted, but I've never had this happen before. It has gone down a little since she hasn't had any food for a full day, but now it doesn't seem to be going down any more. The...

    Impacted crop?

I have a chick, probably about 4-5 weeks old that has had an impacted crop for a couple days now. I have not given her any food for a full day, but she has plenty of fresh water. I hate to starve the poor thing and I don't know what else to do for her. Any suggestions? I know It is bothering her...

One eye closed, one pecker in time out, and rice hulls?

Your chick sounds a lot like my mean one. I don't think I will ever let her in with the others. I don't trust her. I'm afraid if I put her out with the others some night that I will go out in the morning to find dead chickens! I'm not going to take the chance. It took a little while for her to...

2 month pullet died. Any ideas why?

I was wondering about that. I looked around online earlier and that sounded about right. But everything I read was talking about meat birds, so I didn't know if that was common in other breeds as well. Mine was a Rhode Island Red. What causes it and is it something I should worry about with the...

One eye closed, one pecker in time out, and rice hulls?

I had problems with a chick that would peck the eyes of others. I tried separating her for a day, and that didn't work, so I tried a week. She still went straight for the eyes of the others chicks within a minute of putting her back in with the rest. She was very cruel about it. It wasn't just a...

2 month pullet died. Any ideas why?

I had a two month old pullet die. I noticed Sunday evening she wasn't feeling well, wasn't eating, and her abdomen was swollen with fluid build up. She was lethargic and didn't move around much. She did drink plenty of water. In fact she would lay right beside the water bucket and drink but...

    Lethargic with swollen abdomen...Help please

Her crop felt empty last night and today. She doesn't appear to be eating anything at all. She also feels a little cold to me.

    Lethargic with swollen abdomen...Help please

I have a young pullet, about 2 months old that is not doing well. I noticed yesterday evening that she was quite lethargic and didn't move around much. She mostly layed in one spot, but she does move at some point because I find her in different areas of the coop. This morning when I went to...

    Got sand? You should!

How important is it to get the right sand? I understand if it's too big you would have trouble scoop cleaning it, but if it is too small will it hold moisture and not dry out properly? I'm still confused on what is best.
