    Heartbreaking losses...

Oh that is so harsh....I know we are losing large stands of trees by the acre because farmers are clearing more and more land. The protection of acres of thick trees must help wildlife survive but when there are only small patches of forest left....nowhere to hide......

    Heartbreaking losses...

Hi Frenchman Creek, The losses happened when they were fully exposed to a full blown blizzard. They were snow covered and the ones that died a few days later were wet and weak but hoped that moving them to the heated area would help them through but they were just too far gone by then. I even...

    Heartbreaking losses...

Hi Kathy...thanks Here are some pictures of a couple of our pens. The first one is showing when I had my Guineas in it (it was dark when I thought about getting a picture of it) but then they go free range and I used it for my young Peas. it is a bigger version of the one some of them were...

    Heartbreaking losses...

I appreciate the feed back. The only birds I lost were the ones I hatched from southern farms. I did not lose any of the ones from my own flock but the night that I lost the 2 Opals was a particularly nasty snow storm that blew into their pen. My hubby thought they were fine and didn't put a...

    Heartbreaking losses...

I have had Peas for about 7 yrs. They were in the barn in winter but lost a couple over the years to respiratory illnesses. Now they are in several buildings with areas that are open to outdoors but are still enclosed by hardware cloth.

    Heartbreaking losses...

This last cold snap reduced my Peayoungsters quite a bit. My losses include my 2 Opal hens, a Silver Pied and Purple Silver Pied cock, a black shoulder male, a white hen and then a Mink snuck in a rabbit hole into one of the pens and took the head off my Bronze hen. I now have no Opal, no...

    Lets play the Identity game

Oh, my confusion seems to be that I did have two hatch from Cameo Pied but there is only one of those in there....I do not know where my other one went to other than they got out once when I wasn't home and my hubby assured me they got them all but I forgot there were two and was somehow...

    Lets play the Identity game

Ok, makes sense. I looked back over my order and hatch and these 2, along with a Purple hen were from a Purple pen. The Spalding BS was supposedly from Silver Pieds but the 5 that hatched were either IB or BS with the BS looking like these instead of Pieds as I was expecting. I lost 2 along...

What happened to this duck's wings?

These ducks could quiet possibly be closely bred since we sell off the Drakes and keep the young ones for the following year but this one looks to have been part of the Pekin/Muskovy crosses.

IB males or one could be hen as there are "mousy" areas so thinking the front one is a hen.

What happened to this duck's wings?

Well let's see, they get a mix of cracked corn, whole corn, 20% crumble, 24% gamebird, oats, , sunflower seeds with a little bread mixed in for a treat plus they are free rangers. Too high protein? This is the first I have ever seen it out of hundreds of ducks but this bunch happened to finish...

What happened to this duck's wings?

I never noticed anything when they were hatchlings and it wasn't until about a month ago that I see this duck's wings spread out. I am thinking that it was a growth spurt but it never changed.

    Peachick mysteries, gotta love'em!

I only received a run down of all the birds she had that they could be from so I know at least one parent is a Spalding. The darker one is more black now. Will have to get another picture of them.

5 month old Hen developed wry neck

Ok, thought about injury as well. They are in a large holding house right now. The inside has plenty of head room for them on the roosts but there are also roosts along the outer wire enclosure that were originally constructed for the Guineas. I thought perhaps she could have hit her head...

5 month old Hen developed wry neck

I noticed one of my Opal hens was staring at the ground. At first I thought she was looking for bugs then I realized that even when after I chased her over to another location, she would drop her head again. I picked her up and found a severe kink in her neck and I mean like a knot kink. Can I...

    Peachick mysteries, gotta love'em!

These two are out of either emerald Spalding or pied emerald Spalding as a father, pied emerald spaldings, silver pied, and peach silver pied hens Since there aren't any really strong pied markings, I will assume the solid Spalding is "baby daddy" to both?
