    Lavender Orpington Shredder Gene Help

How many feathers are we talking? Poultry central advises pulling out broken feathers at least 8 weeks before a show to allow time to grow back. Do you have time? Are there too many? Diminishing returns if there are a bunch.

Lav or blue & shredder gene

@JedJackson thx! None of my other chicks (different breeds) have this issue and they are fed high quality food and def no lice so guessing it is overbreeding. Can this be caused by poor nutrition in the hen?

Lav or blue & shredder gene

I have 2 hatchery blue australorp with feather issues. Everything I read points to this being the shredder gene but that seems to be associated with the Lavender gene (per multiple threads)? Hatchery does not sell Lav birds. Can the gene effect any color or is there something else going on?

    Scratch n Peck Feed

I don’t have much luck feeding S&P dry. They tend to leave all the supplements behind and eat the grain. I love it for fermenting feed though. Once fermented they eat so much less it is almost as economical as org pellets (not S&P brand) plus better for them. I alternate between 16 & 18. We get...

    ~The Sapphire Gem~ A Breed's Chat Thread

Possibly, but I just had to get rid of my young Isbars status beginning of the years. Even with clipped wings they were vaulting over my garden fence and managing to roost in my neighbor's tree. I'm sticking to girls with junk in their trunk.

When does copper show in copper Marans?

@WonkierZulu thx! I didn't realize I would need to be THAT patient. 😮

When does copper show in copper Marans?

I have a few chicks that were sold as blue copper Marans. They are a few days shy of 5 weeks so they're almost feathered out. The heads still have some fluff but the feathers coming in all seem blue so far. Can anyone tell me when the reddish feathers make their appearance? I am beginning to...

    Big Cut on chicks neck!

Is this something mom did you think? I can't tell exactly where the injury is in your pic. Wondering if you're experiencing what I did when I hatched a clutch of sulmtalers. By day 3, multiple chicks had gashes showing up around their necks and head. Took me 2 days to figure out what was...

    Sex link identification help

Follow up for posterity. Now that they are getting mature feathers, they both appear to be golds. I am curious if anyone knows enough about the crosses to know which produces the striped version of the gold sex link? These chick presumably came from the same hatchery but looked different and...

    Are daffodils safe for chickens?

Our daffodils are in the yard, not the run. Ours leave them alone for the most part. I think it just depends on the individual chicken and what else is in the space to investigate. We do not have a lot so easy to keep tabs. With the number you have, that might be challenging.

    Sex link identification help

Anyone have any thoughts or educated guesses? My best guess is these are a red and gold sex link. Is the reddish one red enough to be a RIR? Does anyone know why they would feather out so differently?

    Sex link identification help

A week ago I picked up what are supposed to be a couple of gold sex links from the feed store. They reached in and grabbed two. When I got home and compared the two, they had some very different characteristics so I'm wonderful if I ended up with a different breed altogether. Chick #1 has...

Your Hoovers story? Spec. Small order experiences and COVID delivery times

For anyone keeping score. Chicks were shipped Tues, routed to Hawaii, and shipped back to the mainland sometime Thursday night/ Friday. Today is Saturday and I just got notification at 4 pm that they are at the international distribution center in San Francisco. I presume I will be called on...

Advice/Emergency readiness for shipped chicks disaster

I just returned from the post office. The box isn't even in Sacramento yet. 😭 My address is correct on the tracking information so that was not the issue. The mystery is that even a REGULAR priority package has no reason to be routed to HI, much less a live animal. Thank you for the contact...

Advice/Emergency readiness for shipped chicks disaster

Yes it was - but I’m in California so may not be a concern for you. My understanding is it just depends on the destination. Some routes are very direct and some which are relatively close to the hatchery can get routed all sorts of crazy places because they have established distribution routes...

Advice/Emergency readiness for shipped chicks disaster

Thank you for your rescue remedy, esp the reminder to warm them first. I read on another thread to start with warm electrolyte water to get their temp up. I feel so sick for these babies. Other folks in my metro area ordered from same hatchery and got their babies in 2 days so I thought I was...

Advice/Emergency readiness for shipped chicks disaster

I am in the midst of a shipping crisis. Chicks shipped Tuesday so today was day 3. For some absurd reason my chick were routed to Hawaii - they left there late last night. My post office is not optimistic that they will receive them in time for a Saturday pick up window because they first to go...
