....THROUGH RAISING CHICKENS NUMBER ONE: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU READ IN THE ALL THE CHICKEN BOOKS IN THE WORLD, YOU GAIN ALL THE KNOWLEDGE YOU NEED THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE ON YOUR OWN. ....AND IF YOU CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT, YOU ASK SOMEONE ON THE FORUM! NUMBER TWO: HOW YOU LOOKED AT...

    Chickens being pesky

Its so normal for them to do it. It also helps with mites with they get older and it cools them off. I would fence it off or just let them be. Its probably not easy to train a chicken. LOL

    Same hen~different eggs?

My EE lays light brown eggs too! I was bummed out but she's consistently laying everyday so I can't really complain. I think I will get two more EE's this spring and hope I get more blues!

What is your girls' favorite treats?

My girls love grapes and have attacked a bag of them when I wasn't looking. They can't get enough yogurt and tomatoes but, will barely even eat strawberries which I was shocked by. This summer they got fresh corn on the cob and they clean them so well that I sometimes don't see them mixed in...

    Crop impacted hen

I've had multiple crops that have been overly full. I massage them for a while and I give them Apple Cider Vinegar (with the "mother") mixed in their water and yogurt. It helped a lot! I have heard that some people have to cut it open and clean it out but, mine never got that bad plus I would...

    Scabs on Comb!? HELP!

I read that iodine is something that I can put on the comb. Is there anything else that I can do? It also says that the disease will run its course. What signs or symptoms should I expect to see? Could this kill her?

    Scabs on Comb!? HELP!

So my RIR has pretty large comb and recently she has been getting sores on one side of it. They are now scabs and are black. I can post a picture tomorrow if it helps but, I was reading about Fowl Pox. Is that a possiblity? She's six months old now and she is the only one of the four I have...

I got dooped, but by whom???? Give me your best guess..

Quote: She is a beautiful bird but, definitely has RIR in her. I would say she is the one laying those yummy mystery brown eggs! Even though she's not what you expected she is an amazing bird and will be giving you lots of eggs!

    She finally squatted!

I know that this the only place that would be as excited as I am that finally my freeloading RIR has finally squatted this afternoon. I was convinced that she was rebelling against me but, she has had a change of heart I assume. Can't wait to see her start laying!

Hen has HUGE comb and waddles - pic included

My RIR (Lucy) was big like that at 15 months and now her comb is flopped over. She didn't start laying until about 20 weeks. You might see her lay sooner though. She's my best layer right now though!

    Great big egg layers

I have two RIR and two EE. My EE I get an egg every couple of days but, my RIR has been laying consistently everyday. Mine have been really mild temper but, definitely run the roost. Very sweet birds and when they are laying they are super mellow. How could you pass up this face:

    EE pics please

These are both my EE and they have been laying since the 21st and they are about 5 1/2 months.

    End of egg cracked

I had the same issue a couple weeks back. My handy husband built a larger lip on the nesting box so I can fill it with more shavings so when they kick it around it doesn't fall out. Other ideas that people gave me where to put cardboard down in the bottom below the shavings to cushion them...

Egg laying equal to type of treats

I will definitely try them! My chick-a-dees have a very sophistocated palate but, I will give it a try and see!

Egg laying equal to type of treats

I am now curious about your fig theory and might try it. Are you using dried figs or fresh figs? Best of luck through the nasty storm and I hope your girls stay safe and sound!

One of my girls isn't laying yet 24 weeks.

I'm having some late bloomers too!

    Did I get a Roo???

They look just like my Ameraucanas (e.g. EE). I had one that looked like a "chipmunk" and the other was just a gray little fluffy ball. I'm not an expert but, I'd think that its safe to say that she is a hen.
