I appreciate all the words of comfort, but I have to correct my oringal post, it wasn't the roof of the coop but the roof of the run. Once I reread it, I was like "what?". The coop and run are 99.999% complete we just have to put some trim on one window. I'm still in shock and struggling but...
Thanks for the thoughts. Went out and checked on them once last night when I couldn't sleep, the little chicks didn't go to their brooder coop or the big coop last night they huddled up against the side of the run, the big chicks put themselves to bed as usual. This morning I went out to check...
Saturday afternoon my husband completed the roof on the chicken coop and it is all done. I moved my brooder coup out into the run with the plan of continuing supervised play dates but with the little ones in constant view. Sadly Saturday evening, my husband died unexpectedly at 55 years old...
I live in Central VA and honestly I'm not doing anything. I don't do anything special for my outdoor dogs come winter except ensure if we have a long cold spell that they have unfrozen water available. As someone else mentioned chickens have done just fine for many generations without modern...
Thanks Ron C, I've read the "fully feathered" thing before but I guess I don't totally understand it. Yeah, they have some feathers, but if you feel them you also feel a lot of prickly things that tell you that new feathers are still emerging, so to me they aren't fully feathered. My poor...
My youngest chicks will be 5 weeks old in a couple of days. I've been using a heat lamp a little each day with them maintaining the 5 degree temp drop per week. For the most part they don't need any heat during the day, but I still put it on at night as its been dropping down to the 50's -...
I just joined the Chickens for Fairfax facebook group, am I wrong or does the momentum seem to be dying? I'm not currently a Fairfax County resident but have been in the past and I still work in that area and have a grave concern for people being permitted and capable of semi-self reliance...
Congrats on gettting yours in the coop. Mine are going to need a couple of more weeks as I'm trying to integrate them to my 12 week olds, its going so so. They seem to do well together for several hours but then the big kids get bored and like to pick on them and they start peeping to go home, lol.
Just curious why you all say cockeral? I have a 4 week old that is supposed to be a pullet that looks almost identical minus not as much comb. I'm wondering if I need to give "her" a better looking at. Thanks in advance!
I'll admit that I'm a complete newbie but in addition to the chicken's comfort and safety and your own sanity don't you need to check with the state that you are considering moving them to to see if they have any specific requirements like NPIP certification or something?
Great thread. I'm currently working on integrating my almost 4 week olds with my 12 week olds. So far I've just been doing "play dates" as someone called it above, a couple of hours here and there and they all go back to their own coop/brooder for bedtime. Its actually working out pretty well...
Haven't had a chance to get on in a few days but wanted to thank you for taking the time to write that most detailed post, it is indeed very helpful. Thanks again!
So my 11 week old chicks didn't get let out of the coop today until after church, we were running late and I didn't want to get pine shavings on my clothes before I left. When I opened the door one of them was dead:-( This same one had been acting strangely outside in the run yesterday. It...
