Came across this old post in researching milk finishing our ducks. We do and have for a long time, given our poultry (Chicken and guinea) both milk and cheese that is slightly past sale date. Not That it’s bad, but not anything we want to consume (or we just have excess). The love it all. 60ish...
Thanks for all the helpful replies. I went ahead and gave the keet some water. It was thirsty. I put food and water In the incubator as it was the last one left and isn’t ready for the brooder with the competition. Turned down temp a bit.
Hope this can help someone since no one was around to...
Hello! I just hatched some guinea keet eggs after the guinea hen abandoned the nest on day 25.
I had one egg that had trouble hatching and I assisted (should has assisted earlier but was my first time and I was nervous to start too soon).
Keet was definitely ready to hatch. Wing over head was...
Her crop seems like it did not empty overnight. Why would that happen? She only ate two mealworms today and then gave up on the rest. I touched her beak to the electrolyte/probiotic water a few times but she does not appear to be drinking on her own.
She does seem underweight. I checked her throughly for mites and lice and no signs. She hasn't laid an egg in a very long time that I know of, though she is coming out of molt. I found an egg in an odd place today that could have been hers. Only so many blue egg layers. I worried about her being...
I have a hen who is around 4 years old and suddenly acting not herself. She is acting kind of confused and disinterested in foraging. She still does come out into the yard some but doesn't really scratch or peck at things. Last two nights she went into the best box area instead of roosting. I am...
We have a rooster that started getting crusty ears more than a month ago. I've been cleaning them daily with 50% hydrogen peroxide and water and then drying each ear. Also putting vetrx under his wings and on comb for about two weeks. He seems perfectly healthy otherwise. Anyone have any idea...
Hello! About an hour ago I noticed our rooster, about 10 month old silver laced wyandotte, standing alone and one eye shut. I was able to catch him, which is very unusual even with the shut eye. I opened it and put some vetericyn ophthalmic gel into it hoping it'd flush anything bad out. I just...

Just wanted to share this.... Collected this egg the other day. Our white leghorns are a little over 8 months old. I couldn't believe those small birds could do this! 91.9 grams!
I feed crawfish shells regularly. My girls love it. Just break them up some. They'll make due. And there are a lot of nutritents beyond calcium in crustacean shells.
We do not have them on medicated feed. I think coccidia may be an issue. We lost a chick two nights ago but I can't be sure if it was coccidia or the temperature got a little lower than should have. Coccidia didn't really cross my mind, but I'm so glad you mentioned it! After losing the chick, I...
Thank you for your thoughts. I am afraid I may have caused the problem because I accidentally rotated the eggs past day 18. It was my first time incubating and I was not expecting to be doing it at all and so it may have been my fault. Just happy to see three seem to be doing well.
I'm probably just overly concerned since one of the four chicks did not make it. However, today One of our new chicks was standing up looking kind of stumbly, fell over and then rolled onto its back and legs in the air and didn't really fight to right itself. I scooped it out and it seemed kind...
She did not make it.
Her leg seemed to be completely twisted. The foot would not sit on the ground properly. It seemed to be some issue that began with the hip joint, that it was not properly aligned. Her knee also did not want to bend and pointed at an outward angle. She never made it to...
This is our first time hatching eggs so I'm not sure how big they typically are but all I could find was some info that said 2-5 ounces on average. Which makes us think they might be from the Bantam.
We incubated some eggs from a Silver Laced Wyandotte hen when she abandoned the nest after a week of sitting. We have two roosters. A silver laced Wyandotte rooster, and a Bantam Lavender Ameraucana. We always thought the Bantam couldn't reach, but the Wyandottes are fairly small and young...
