It's DH's favorite. Little mutant farm mascot, I guess. In case it does turn out to be a cockerel I've been trying to spend extra time with it, so maybe it won't be a jerk. I keep teasing DH that it's going to ride around on his shoulder like a parrot.
There's a couple in my June hatch that...
I don't disagree. I would guess at least 3 of the 8 will be cockerels including this one, based on combs. As far as the tail goes, there is actually no tail nub back there compared to what the others have. Just some little poofy side butt feathers 😂:
5 weeks, I think. I'd rather it not be a cockerel! There is one black in this batch that is already growing little red wattles that screams cockerel to me. Hard to say for certain about anything with the mixed breeding though... I've got a couple hens with black combs.
Sorry to disappoint, the only other person here is my 4 year old 😂 It actually wasn't as difficult as I expected it to be. They are both on their way to new flocks as we speak! And I am free of roosters now until these little cockerels grows up. DH is convinced the tailless one is a cockerel. He...
At this moment, yes. Because I haven't caught the roos yet and it would be SO much easier to just lure them into crates. Neither one is pet friendly and it's going to be a chore to catch them without getting my eyes pecked out 😂 Nevermind trying to stuff them into laundry baskets. And we just...
Of course the market has to be saturated with chicks as soon as mine hatch 😂 even the farm stores are back to having chicks in stock. Guess I can't win. I might end up giving some away.
On the upside, someone is coming to pick up both my roos this morning, he has several flocks that need...
Checked last night and #12 egg was dead. It also happened to be the overly porous one that looked super weird (but alive) when I candled it before lockdown.
Sooo, I'm done! And I haven't had any interest in them yet  Part of me is happy because this batch should have some neat colors, but...
Well that just sounds like a comical sight 😂 poor girl doesn't know what she'd be in for!
Once it gets dark here I'll be candling my lone remaining egg to see if it's DIS. It's still early day 22 but everyone else is out and fluffed so I'm suspicious. And DH is already probing me about whether...
Thanks! I did manage to get it loose this afternoon, and cleaned up. It's bobbling around the incubator right now and seems to be on the way to normal 😊
3 black chicks out of 11, this time. The other 8 are yellow or orange-y... Here's a few.
Seems my reply got eaten :( I did manage to get the little one free, back in it's cup now and seems to be getting stronger. Hopefully a good rest and some drying time is all it needs.
Thanks to both for the advice!
Stucky #2 made it out no worse for wear and is bumbling around, but #1 isn't doing so hot. Anything else I can do about the glued down piece of dried up membrane? It hasn't softened at all and the poor bub is trying to move around but failing miserably. Can't tell if it's also a wry neck, or...
Thanks!
They are slowly making progress. Both legs are free on the older one now, but it's still got a big piece glued to it's back and one wing, I think. The other one is half out but each end is stuck in the shell. I have to go run some errands so hopefully they will free themselves while...
Well.
One egg left with no pip yet, and two that zipped 3/4 of the way and then got stuck for some reason. The older one had been like that since yesterday afternoon and is now "out" with minimal assistance, but has dried membrane cemented onto it's back and leg so can't uncurl. I coated it in...
Oh no! I'm sorry. Maybe one will pull through and it's just early :fl
Seven hatchers here so far, several others working on zipping. In spite of my lopsided ratio of BSL hens and two mostly black roos, I've got mostly gold chicks running around. :love I must've grabbed more from the gold...
Woke up to four chicks this morning, mid day 20. 😂 I'll have to read the last 25 pages later, I've been busy with a sick DH and hadn't had time to check in lately. One more busted out a few hours ago and two others are working on unzipping now.
The four as I moved them to the brooder:
When you figure it out, let me know 😂 I can manage the egg and light with one hand, but my phone camera almost always refuses to focus long enough to take a picture worth sharing. Just a blurry blob.
Hatch day is the 1st for me, so I'm just happy that they are all still going (and apparently...
So, as I was putting the youngsters back in the brooder to go inside for the night, I noticed one has no tail. 😂 So I checked closer and there are a few nub feathers, so not really zero tail, but he(? maybe) is definitely not like the others. Legs are greenish, too. Not sure how I didn't see the...
Brought the nearly 4 week old May hatchers out for the first play in the grass 😍 since its finally back to 75°+ and sunny. They are mesmerized by all the bird sounds and activity 😂
