This gives me hope!
This weekend my first eggs hatched. 2 out of 18 from our own flock in a styrofoam incubator. My husband wasn't too fond of me trying to hatch our own babies, so I figured I'd try it out with a less expensive incubator. The first one to start hatching pipped from the wrong end...
Thank you everyone for your advice and concern! We applied Pick-No-More and kept them on the chic feed, I also added some extra protein into their diet. (scrambled eggs and crickets when we had extra). That seemed to help for about 2 weeks, and then I noticed one day about a week and a half ago...
We just put our chicks outside yesterday in the big coop. They have a heat lamp set up, and a large area for their run that they have been enjoying. We moved them out yesterday due to us noticing that one of our orpington's was getting a bare back. We never saw any blood, or feathers laying...
Started out with 10 nuggets this year. 5 golden laced wyandottes, and 5 buff orpingtons. One of the buffs died the morning after we brought her home :-(
Then about two weeks ago we had one wyandotte mysteriously pass away as well :-(
The other are doing great and are developing their own...
They're adorable! And I definitely agree! You are not stupid! Unfortunately, I am not very experienced myself. Hopefully we can get you some good advise!
Do they have a constant supply of fresh water and food?
I had to get my husband's tarantula crickets this past week and I bought extra to give to the chicks. They were absolutely terrified of them at first! But of course once one was brave enough to go after one it was a free for all! Those poor crickets didn't have chance!
Okay! Thank you for the advice! I'm really squeemish with bugs so I'm trying to avoid crickets, or mealworms (Even though my husband has a pet tarantula and usually has a few extra crickets around the house.)
I just worry about whether or not they're getting enough protein during the winter...
Alright! I gave them some yogurt and at first they would go out of their way to avoid it, but I checked on them about 30 minutes later and they had licked (pecked?) the plate clean! Little goobers!
Anyone from the Northern Ohio/Indiana sell any eggs? If you do, about how much do you sell them for?
We have 9 new hens (little nuggets) and 4 adult hens. We already get too many from the 4, so every couple weeks I give a dozen to my in-laws and brother-in-law.
Since I may have a slight...
So I keep hearing (reading) about people feeding their chickens hard boiled eggs. I've always been opposed to it (Just a me thing, it just seems weird to me) but I'm wondering if maybe I should give my chickens some every now and then for extra protein?
Are there any negative effects that can...
My little nuggets are about 3 1/2 weeks old. I swear, they've doubled in size since this morning! Is it okay for me to give them some plain yogurt? I always have some around for a weekly treat to our adult chickens, but I feel like our nuggets are getting bored in their mini house.
Thanks!
Thank you both for the replies! :-) Ocap, thank you for being so sweet and thinking of me! I live right on the OH/IN border so that would be a bit of a drive :-/ But I will definitely do some searching to see if I can find somewhere to order!
We bought a juicer a few weeks ago, and today (after FINALLY getting around to cleaning it and buying plenty of fresh fruits and veggies) I made my own cup. Much to my dismay, there was A LOT of waste. I put the 'waste' back through the juicer unit a few times and got even more juice out. But I...
Hello! I'm looking for any color Jersey Giants that I can purchase. Our local farm store has Black Jersey Giants for sale every year, but we are looking for Whites and any other varieties there are. We just fell in love with our first flock of Black Jersey Giants! If anyone knows of a good place...
They got their weekly yoghurt treat, along with some left over salad from earlier this week :-) And since I was home today, they've been free ranging all day too :-)
Cyclops update!!
:-) She's been doing wonderful! We've just been using the warm compress on her eye, and mixing in crumble with yoghurt to get her to eat starting last week. She's back to eating regular food and eating grass outside the coop.
I did notice her eye was opened today, although...
