keeping the lone surviver of this morning's predator?

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me a couple years ago. My survivor, a buff orp is still laying 5 eggs a week. All by herself..Baby your survivor for a little bit, get more... but im proof that a solo chicken can do VERY well for quite a while.. btw, im getting 5 new babies tomorrow...

    Ok without heat lamp?

Agree with some of whats already been posted. 2 things matter. 1) are they acting like they are cold? you know.. huge dog pile of chicks? 2) how cold is their brooder?? you never said how cold it is now. They will let u know if its too cold, assuming you are looking before they get TOO cold...

    Medicated or not??

Dont worry about it. Seriously... Go with your gut. millions of birds have been raised on medicated, billions im thinking have not. will this be what matters in your flock? Doubtful i think and in a couple months, you wont care either.

    Let's Try this Again! Hello!

Welcome to byc :) I was 'underground' with my chickens for a couple years. It's kind of scary at times... relationships with neighbors can rise and fall and it just takes one person to call you in. However, my experience was fine, my hens made quite a bit of noise actually and I used to get...

    Organic vs. Non Organic Feed

I just switched to organic feed (from Modesto Mills) and my chicken love the stuff. It has been difficult finding it until recently around here. The feed looks a lot better, you can really see the difference. Based on the scale of my little operation, neither cost or difficulty in finding it are...

Maybe a dumb question - chicks pecking the bottom of their brooder

The way I look at it is pretty simple - How do they survive in the wild? Do they eat bugs at such a young age? Certainly yes. However, they also have access to grit. So if it was me, I'd go very light on the bugs the first couple weeks, I don't see any harm with that.

    Heat lamp advise please

Won't do much good when you already have chicks, but future tense, these things get amazing reviews and reduce your fire hazard big time. I just ordered one for my new chicks, which are scheduled to arrive in about 6 weeks. http://www.brinsea.com/prod-EcoGlow_Chick_Brooder-239.aspx

Do you add duramyacin to chicks water.

The only thing I've ever added to my chickens water is a tiny bit of apple cider vingegar. I'd never medicate them unless warranted, leave that for the factory farms.

ok have many question about chickens

    1. If it was me, I'd buy a bag of starter / grower feed, but obviously that isn't required. Scratch by itself isn't that great and personally I don't feed my chickens any 'meat', or whatever is in cat food these days. 2. Hen(s) and babies? How many total just 3? 2ft by 3ft is only 6sq feet...

    Should I replace my brooder?

Brooder looks fine to me, probably better than mine. Just curious, what makes you think vitamin problems? I haven't seen your other thread, so maybe there's more info there.. Anyways, good luck and I agree with bleach, spray bottle, mist it down, maybe wipe it down too with some paper towels...

hello from the burbs of denver!!

Check out Murdoch's just south of C-470 and Santa Fe. They sell out fast, but get deliveries of new chicks throughout the week, pretty much every week in the spring. They had new ones come in today, but even by now they are probably gone. I've been calling them every couple days to find out what...

    Cockadoodles Chicken Coop

Quick little note about me... I live in the Denver area and am the son of a 60 something year old ex-chicken farmer from europe that used to help run a family farm of 50,000 chickens. While for some reason my dad now hates all things chicken, I have recently discovered urban chicken farming here...

Speaking of rosters, what are we going to do with the influx of 'illegal' roosters in Denver? I've had to deal with it on a small scale... the occaisional sexed pullet that start crowing one night. This law is going to spawn a new industry in the city. We need a chicken exchange or something...

Maybe he will change his mind the next time the corporate farms that help pay his salary have their next salmonella scare and it hits a little closer to home. But if no, thats ok too. He's obviously not a champion of self sufficiency and thinks corporate america knows best for his family. He is...

With the new law, I'm planning on getting my flock back up to 5 hens. Unfortunately a fox got to all but one of mine about a year back, he made it into their run at sun up and only my buff orp survived. With just one chicken remaining, and knowing that this law was being proposed, I took a let's...

Holy crap! I just heard about the new chicken ordinance here in Denver. I've been waiting years for this. My girls can come out of hiding finally! This city surprises me sometimes. I wrote letters to several of our city council members and they were all so skeptical. I had almost given up hope...

Bummer... but that's ok, if nothing else I'll get to see all the animals I don't already own Quote: I am pretty sure the birds are already judged but I think they need to remain for the duration of the show. I know last year I was there on the last weekend and the chickens were still...
