This morning there’s still no change. So I guess it wasn’t the leg band.
As long as she’s keeping up with the other chicks and able to get to the food and water, I’ll just give her more time to see if what ever it is heals up.
I had some feather loss going on at that time, didnt know if it was mites or other hens picking. I covered both bases by treating with ivermectin and putting pinless peepers on the ones with no feather loss.
The chicks that came from the hatchery banded had those types of elastic bands. I couldnt for the life of me figure out a way to stretch them off over their toes with out putting pressure on their fragile legs, so I just cut them off with a sharp pair of wire cutters.
Maybe when I run out of...
How easy are those to put on a chick by yourself, meaning one handed?
I went with the zip ties because I knew I could manage one hand to hold the chick and one hand to tighten the zip tie.
No, I don’t think she’s being pecked or picked on. I think that was just a clumsy body slam. The other chicks bounce around like little ping pong balls and seem to just bounce off of one another. Some pecking as normal as they explore their world, but nothing excessive.
I’ll update once I get...
This is Gimpy.
Gimpy hatched Oct 14th and seemed fine on arrival on Oct 16. The next day she seemed to have a bit of pasty butt so that was cleaned up. When I put her back in the brooder just after that she was favoring her left leg.
I gave it 24 hrs and checked her again, seemed fine on...
Thanks for the heads up. I would have never known…I always come straight to the forums lol!
Here’s a Chonky fluffy butt playing Queen of the perch to welcome all the new visitors.
I knew poop was inevitable and the cover was right there on the shelf next to the brooder for just a couple bucks so I grabbed one!
I have a mix of one each of a bunch of different breeds/color combos.
Green Queen, Olive Egger, Orpington, Marans, Swedish Flower Hen, Ameraucana, Welsummer...
Your plate might still be too high. Have 11 chicks hatched Oct 14th and the slightly smaller version of that plate.
This is where I have my legs set and they go under no problem.
Yea, I used the gallery function here on the site.
It would have been nice to be able to use TikTok or Facebook some how. I was just trying to avoid having yet another place to upload videos to.
That’s actually a good idea. I’d have to double check but I think my truck actually has a built in inverter with a plug in the armrest.
Maybe there will be a road trip in my future.
I use a small baking tray to hold my chick feeder and waterer. They still kick some crumbles into the water and poop on the food in the tray. It’s still less messy than no tray.
Checked on gimpy, she's still not happy to bear weight on her leg but her crop was full so she must be getting out from under the heat plate to eat. That's good news.
Then I just hung around and absorbed some cuteness.
I also have a bunch hatched Tuesday and delivered Thursday. I'm seeing a bit of eye pecking going on with mine. Nothing excessive yet. Seems to be happening more with the ones with lighter fluff, it makes the dark eyes stand out more as a target I guess?
I'm not sure how exactly to stop it, I...
This is correct.
Concrete wont stop frost heave. You'll need to dig below the frost line to prevent the posts heaving. Concrete will help weigh things down and hold them sturdy if you get a lot of wind. Probably for a chicken run you wont need to make actual piers or footings, but dumping a...
