I've just culled my first quail due to her arthritis. So... done the worst part, removed the skin and cleaned out and washed. How soon can I cook it?
Should I still refrigerate and wait 24 hours?
Also what is the best way to cook a 3 year old quail hen? I was thinking of wrapping with bacon...
I did manage to "operate" to remove bumble foot on two of my quail. Because they are so tiny I used a sterilised needle to remove it; it was just like removing a splinter from my finger. I soaked before and after in Epsom Salts, and put on one drop of 3% H2o, and a dressing. It worked well!
A small amount will ferment much quicker. Try making a starter using only about half a cup of feed and slightly warm water and put it somewhere warm. After 2 to 3 days it should have started to ferment and you can double up the quantities each day. I would describe the smell as being more akin...
FF can be eaten at any stage (just like sauerkraut) I do not drain, if it's too sloppy I add more pellets. I take what I need each day and then top up with more water and more pellets. Every week or less I use a new container with some of the original ferment as a starter. And every few weeks I...
I like FF and I find it no effort, minimal time. As to saving money... firstly they eat about the same amount of food, I use layers pellets and it swells up 3 to 4 times volume but that just means they eat 3 to 4 times as much. secondly... they don't flick it about so none gets wasted in that...
I would recommend starting a small batch first to get the ferment started. It's the same principal as sourdough bread - maybe you have tried that? Regarding the "smell" ... I love it!
No plants yet. Some conifer branches hanging down, fortunately we have a conifer tree that we were planning to get rid of so I can hack off fresh branches as needed! There are two wooden platforms, one either side, raised up on house bricks to give extra space on top for food and sand tray and...
Just tricky gauging the temperature. I've removed some of the panes and covered over with hardware cloth. And open the door in the day - they are in a run inside the greenhouse, but the main thing is it's dry!
Yes they have started moulting now. My seven laying girls were all pretty regular till about 10 days ago. And today only 1 egg! They have just moved into a greenhouse / aviary 3 days ago too.
