Henry was between nine and ten years old when he died.
We had a devastating few weeks that suddenly left me with just Henry's two daughters. Henry's favourite hen, Fret, the mother of all the chicks that hatched and one of their daughters, Tull, all died within a few weeks of each other.
I used to be an automatic door just like that.:p
The big advantage was If I didn't open on time I opened a bit later. The door I've got now, if it doesn't open, it doesn't open.:(
How old was Fabio when he died? Given we joined BYC close together and went to the Cafe at about the same time, almost seven years ago would you believe, he must have been around seven years old (?)
I'm about to introduce a cockerel very kindly donated by Perris who it seems I have also known...
Oh Tonya :hugs:hugsThat's a terrible loss.
I must confess I don't remember many of the roosters names that I've read about on BYC, but I will always remember Fabio and how patient you were with him. Most other keepers would have cooked him. Yet, you showed that with gritted teeth and time, plus...
Four hours today. It stayed dry after some light morning rain.
I'm a happy chap having been given a date for the pre opp cataract consultation. It would be really cool not to have to wear glasses except for computer work and reading.
We had the work day. Best bunch since I've been at the field...
The door leading edge is protected by the recess that Perris mentions. But, the is a cotter-pin that goes through the door that provides a wire attachment point and a fox, more likely a weasel, could hold the pin in it's jaws and drag the door open enough to get a paw in the gap. Easy to make...
I think the thing to do is not tell people about these places. It's like those articles that publicise unspoiled beauty spots; they won't be unspoiled for long once a few thousand tourists have tramped through them due to some hack writing about them.
The greatest camouflage is the ability to keep perfectly still.
I have yet to see any reliable evidence that particular feather colours and blends make any difference to the rate of predation for a particular arrangement.
In an age where the darkest scum of our species is blocking the light from our lives it's hard to lose just one good person let alone a pioneer and advocate for the other species we live with but who have no say in the conservation of their environment.
Not much. Just need to bring the new frame from SIL and make sure it all fits as planned and get the auto door working. Oh arr, need to find some more bowls for feed and water.
Two hours today. Dry and cool with a light wind.
Got a temporary frame built for the Nestera coop. Need to make a couple of alterations to the coop. It needs a window like I fitted to the Solway and the door needs replacing with something thicker than the one supplied. I've got a thicker sheet...
We shall see.
What Glais has got to do is get the hens to like him. Nature taking it's course often isn't any hen or rooster/cockerel will do. The little feckers have preferences, even when it comes to the most gorgeous looking feather displays.
He's got to want to live there. At his age he'll...
