Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

In an age where the darkest scum of our species is blocking the light from our lives it's hard to lose just one good person let alone a pioneer and advocate for the other species we live with but who have no say in the conservation of their environment.

Well stated, and thanks for sharing. She says some things that really can't be said enough.

It just doesn't seem like it would take much snuffling or pawing from, say, a fox to move it just enough to open up a tiny gap. Happy to take your word for it though!

Some of my chickens have learnt to get through the door if it's open just a crack.
The door leading edge is protected by the recess that Perris mentions. But, the is a cotter-pin that goes through the door that provides a wire attachment point and a fox, more likely a weasel, could hold the pin in it's jaws and drag the door open enough to get a paw in the gap. Easy to make safe but the whole door opening bit isn't that well thought out in my opinion.
In general though the Nestera coop is made from better quality recycled plastic than the Solway coop. The fit and finish is a lot better although there are still joint gaps where the wedges don't pull the joint together properly. I may make a few plastic wedges to sort this out. The Solway coop has a similar problem.

I don't know about the auto door yet. It was expensive (£150.00) and pushed the coop price up to roughly £450,00. I'll be sure to point this out when Glais gets here. :p

Page 3200!
I don't think Shad throws a party every thousand pages.
If someone had told me when I started the thread it would go on for four years and get two million views I would have laughed.

Four hours today. It stayed dry after some light morning rain.
I'm a happy chap having been given a date for the pre opp cataract consultation. It would be really cool not to have to wear glasses except for computer work and reading.

We had the work day. Best bunch since I've been at the field! They did lots, most of which I wasn't expecting and, because they had proper supervision, mostly the group treasurer, they did no damage and didn't strim the section in the extended run I wanted left alone.

Not quite the berry maze C had envisioned but the goose run is clean and half a dozen fruit bushes got planted. Wait and see if C keeps on top of it.

The above work and more (they took down the wrecked greenhouse) was done by a group of volunteers. They did a fantastic job.
