    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Officially got my first egg yesterday! Pretty sure it was my Leghorn at 20 weeks. Now I just need to get my other 5 laying and I'll be eating good. Still have a white rock, barred rock, RIR, EE, and a Golden Laced Wyandotte not laying but at 20 weeks it's still a little early. I did put some...

    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I've been fighting it myself. My birds don't seem to mind it but I would much rather give them something dry to play in.

Tomorrow marks the 4month mark for my flock and now Im 100% sure the white pullet is a White Rock. Very pleased that my extra chick Meyer sent me was a White Rock. She will be an amazing addition to my flock. It's crazy how fast the ladies are growing up. I've been weeding my front yard for a...

Hey there TJ. Welcome! My last flock was able to free range and I was always nervous of hawks. My current flock isn't able to free range and I do not miss worrying about them all the time. Best bet is to make sure you have plenty of hiding places for your chickens to hide. Also, do you keep a...

    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I came back from a little vacation yesterday and started to look closer and the "pullet" looks like she has red earlobes which would make her a white rock. Hoping that means my possible roo is a leghorn pullet. I'm going to try and get better pictures this afternoon. Thanks for all the help...

    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Interesting... looking at pics the hen does look pretty rock like. I don’t see a whole lot of pictures of leghorns without the raised tail feathers.

Anyone able to help me? I am not sure if I have a rooster or not. I got these two White Leghorns as day olds from Meyer. I only ordered 1 but they sent me an extra chick. Anyway, one has tail feathers that look very rooster to me and has a much larger comb than my other leghorn. I was ready to...

    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey guys! Long time no see. Unfortunately I had to get rid of my chickens a couple years ago due to moving to a house with 0 back yard but after some serious work I have been able to build my coop for my 2nd flock! I got my chicks in from Meyer Hatchery last week and we have been doing great so...

    "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I got home from work today and one of my three chickens had been killed. I live in a city but my back yard backs up to a small forested area with some rural animals. I let my chickens free range my back yard with chicken wire across the bottom of my 6’ privacy fence. I’ve had them for 10 months...

    Deep Litter Method and Nematodes

Thank you so much! I just wanted to make sure these weren't types of bugs that would do harm to my ladies.

    Deep Litter Method and Nematodes

My chickens really dont spend any time in their coop besides laying and sleeping and the worm in question seems to stay well below the top layer of bedding so I am unsure if my chickens even really know they are there. Do you think they could have a negative impact on the coop. Should I clean...

    Deep Litter Method and Nematodes

I started using the deep litter method in my small coop. It has pretty good ventilation and all seems to be fine. Last night I went to turn the litter and I noticed the litter was moving. Upon closer inspection there were hundreds of little worms (grub looking) within the lower layers of the...

That's looking awesome! How many chicks do you have? All pullets or do you have cockerels also?

    oyser shells laying feed

In your position I would continue with grower feed but have a separate feeder or bowl for just oyster shell. The chickens that are laying will get enough calcium from the oystershell but the growers will still get enough protein to continue growing. You never have to go to layer feed if you...

    Your Favorite Chicken Breed.

Im really enjoying my Barred Rocks. Love my RIR also. Neither are aggressive. Especially after having pecking order established.

    Egg Mystery... sleuths needed!

I do not think the same bird laid two eggs in 1 day. It could definitely be one of the Marans. That is a very dark first egg to be honest. I have Rocks and a Rhode Island and their first eggs were very light colored. Nothing close to as dark as that one.
