    Whey block

I realize that I am replying to a very old post, but this one popped up when I did a Google Search about chickens/whey blocks. I was thinking about things my dad taught me, about chickens, because of some things that have come up recently with my little flock. My dad raised chickens all of his...

Wichita, KS area: Too many Ducks. Re-homing.

Thank you, Yorkshire Coop. My hubby told me I should have kept my post simple. lol. He said, just write: free ducks. Also, I couldn't find the re-home forum. I've been away from BYC too long. Gotta get used to the format, again.

    New to ducks

I just got through looking at your photos. I LOVE your setup for the wading pool! Our first "inground" pool, they grew out of, by the end of their first summer, so I got a couple of wading pools. It's always a mess, around them. I had put flagstone around their inground pool, so it didn't get...

    New to ducks

They are aDORable! I got mine April of 2016. Mine were all yellow & turned out to be white Pekins. No one at our Atwoods or Tractor Supply really knew what breeds they had.

Wichita, KS area: Too many Ducks. Re-homing.

Short story: I've had 3 Pekins since April 2016. A friend gave us their 4, who are just reaching maturity, but that's too many for us. We were very content with the three. If you live in the Wichita area, & would like to adopt a few, please contact me. One is a drake. Long story: Last Spring, I...

Sponsored Post Tips from Nutrena: Gift-worthy Eggs!

Thank you! I enjoyed the article. I'm not an "ALL natural" rebel who refuses to use commercial food. I serve it (layer variety) to my hens twice a day, moistened, and I keep a feeder full of pellets in their pen in case they want them. Since they are up before I am, they munch on them until...

Laying eggs without shells (not rubber eggs, eggs without shells)

PLEASE HELP---Mtn Laurel or anyone who has experience with this. This is the first serious problem since I got my hens, a year ago. I noticed one of the girls did not come running for dinner, tonight. She was standing still with her feathers puffed up. I had noticed that one of the girls had...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I heard of it somewhere along the line of this thread. I know it was mentioned as making the seeds bitter. Can you explain your Hydrogen Peroxide procedure?---in more detail, please? Spray directly and then rinse? Make a solution of HP/water? How much of each, if so. And do you soak in...

    Food Scraps?

LOL! Yep. We should be careful of what we share with them. They get spoiled so easy! WHen I was a kid, my stepmom brought home a calf for us to raise. She gave it a sip of her coffee one day and from then on, she and my Dad couldn't step foot outside with a coffee cup without that calf...

    Normal Flock Size?

We got our chicks almost a year ago, so we are beginners. We were going to get four, but ended up with six (all hens) . I would like to get more when I have more time and am not babysitting every day. But that will have to be negotiated with my hubby. It took me eight years to get six. lol...

    Food Scraps?

I think of all the predators that eventually took all my brother's chickens that free ranged. Probably because that silly Roo was sitting on the front porch with him, drinking beer!

    Growing fodder for chickens

Thank you ArtGirl, but I still need to know how much water. Do you mean 1 capful per 1 gallon of water? I buy bleach by the gallon, and it is a pretty big cap. lol. Also, I wonder to do it as a rinse or a first soaking. I am afraid that if I soak it with bleach "solution" too long, it will...

what do you all do to keep your birds from being too bored all winter?what do you feed for treats?

BunnyLover44- I "googled" it. There are many different species of it. http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/ar/archive/nov01/giant1101.htm

    Growing fodder for chickens

Could you give me an idea of how much "bleach to water" you use, please? I don't want to use too much. Thank you!

what do you all do to keep your birds from being too bored all winter?what do you feed for treats?

Wow. I hope they know what they are doing. That stuff is very invasive. If I heard that chickens like zebra mussels, I sure wouldn't be introducing them into a new environment just because they could be a cheap source of food (using zebra mussels as an example, not a real consideration)...

    Food Scraps?

I am sorry that I cannot recall which thread I read this on, but using the "Search Discussions..." feature, under "Forum", I am sure you can find out more: I read that one poor outcome from over-doing it with kitchen scraps/treats is "Fatty Liver" disease. An over-weight chicken's liver is...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Quote: I know you're right. It just hasn't been high on my priority list. There are a couple of "feed and seeds" I could check with and a nearby town that has a Co-Op. Special trips anywhere are just hard for me to manage, at present time. I've only checked with the three places that I...
