I would put the eggs and the chick under the broody if your incubator stopped working. Watch to see if she accepts the baby chick. If she does, she'll raise the babies for you. If not, have a safe place to keep the chick with a heat lamp so she can stay warm
I wash in water that is hotter than the egg. Colder water will make the egg contract & pull in bacteria whereas hot water will make the egg expand & push it out. If they are clean, I simply dip the egg in hot water (around 105 F) & a couple tablespoons of Oxine mixed in. If washing eggs, I will...
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've hatched many shipped chicken eggs with varying degrees of success. I feel confident that I'd have a better hatch rate with the local eggs. They also have Royal Palms & Eastern Wild type. Anyone with experience on those other breeds?
I've read that about narrs before. But if they're that friendly, do you (would you) have trouble when it comes down to harvest time? I love my chickens & cannot eat them. My neighbor has no problem there & would be helping me raise the Turks but if they follow him like a dog, he may have trouble...
Someone please help me decide. I want to hatch turkeys this year, but can't decide on the breed. We would want a good table bird, but also one that is easy to manage. We have 80 acres to raise them on, & would like them to free range, but don't want them wandering the neighborhood. Are there any...
That's definitely something I will have to think about. With this incubator and the fact that the eggs lay down I will probably let them sit upright for a day and then set them. I'm just worried about laying down the eggs in this incubator and having the air sells position on the side of the egg...
I'd love to join. I really want to hatch turkeys this year but need an enabler. I may have found a local source for Bourbon Reds, Royal Palms, & Eastern Wild types, but I want Narragansettes.
I didn't know that about CA requiring them to be cage free. I'm licensed by CA state to sell my eggs & there was nothing about that. It won't affect me as I'm cage free, but just surprised I didn't know.
I was charging $4, but someone in town is charging $2, so I brought mine down to $3. For hatching eggs, I've gotten as high as $18 for a dozen...$25 if I had to ship.
Omg! I am hopelessly behind. There are like 50 more pages to read since I last was here.
I'm sorry to say I'm dropping out of the hatch-a-long. I had 2 mysterious deaths & several birds come down sick. I sent the dead ones to USC San Bernardino for necropsy & isolated the sick. Treating the...
I have the Eco 20 & I LOVE it!! Just don't like hatching in it because the fluff gets up into the fan & is difficult to clean. I was considering this incubator for a long time, just couldn't find any reviews. The only review I did find was poor because they received the unit broken.
Stargazing...
I use Valbazen too. Also Safeguard & Ivermectin drops for spot-on treatment. Kills mites & some lice. VetRx is great! So many uses for that. I prefer Tylan 200 though. The 50 needs a much larger dose. I also have Liquamycin 200 (antibiotic), Poultry dust for mites/lice, Vetericyn (wound...
Just give them at least 24 hrs before trying to assist. They may still be able to hatch okay
Revival animal health. Don't get the kit. The activator makes it deadly to chickens
