I just added this years batch of chicks, that range in age from 4-6 months, to my existing flock, The first thing I did was put them in a dog kennel right outside the open wire side of the coop where everyone could see each other and get to know everybody. After about a week and a half I put em...
Yea, around my neck of the woods people sell em off for $3-$5 typically. Although a craigslist add looking for a free breeding roo might go a long way.
I was thinking barred rock or light Sussex starting out. But I'd have to buy either one of them. I may let one of my Buffs or Buff X RIR run with the girls this breeding season and see what I can find next breeding season
Yea, well I plan on using only good laying breeds to kinda have a starting guess, but wanted something with some interesting colors, patterns and personality.
I had some Sex Links once apon a time. The Black rooster was gorgeous and the Red hens were some of my best. They would wait for me to come into the coop and get a scoop of feed then they'd fly up on my arm and eat it out of the scoop. It was funny. They were also good layers.
I kinda have an...
Hey guys, I was wondering if any of y'all cross breed simply for production? I had some RIR/Buff Orp crosses this past year and they were great. They laid the most and biggest eggs I got and when broody time came around they were the first ones to set. So it got me to thinking that maybe if I...
Looks great, I got a "cover" for a commercial feeder I'm using in the bottom of my 5gal bucket and I'll probably use a trash can lid or the bottom of a 55 gal plastic barrel. I totally understand about the waste you get from just using open trays.
I hate to tell you but that's kinda what ducks do. What they can't eat they crap on... and sometimes what they can eat they crap on too. Ducks just crap everywhere.
My duck waterer/pond is an old bathtub. it has a pvc ball valve to drain it and some rocks so the little ones don't have to swim the whole time their in it (learned the hard way they need something to stand on in the water, had a couple drown) It works great. Easy to clean and will last for a...
Ended up with 8 out of 10 hatching and surviving. Some are Buff Orps and the others are 3/4 Buff & 1/4 RIR. Hoping for some more pullets outta the bunch.
I've got 2 hatched so far and 6 more under a broody hen. I'm also saving up another dozen chicken eggs and 8-10 duck eggs to put under 2 more broody Buff Orpingtons that are sitting on NOTHING right now and won't move. Can't wait!!
I have a hen that's setting now and they're basically gonna set there until A) something hatches or B) they get tired of it and loose the "fever". Typically it's fine to gather a clutch of eggs you want her to hatch and then "steal" her eggs and replace them with the eggs you want her to hatch...
Found one of my Buff Orpington/Rhode Island Red cross girls setting last night and moved her to a more secluded location (nest box and all) I'm adding eggs til I get her up to 12. She's got 6 under her right now and will hopefully get the rest tonight out of my other hens to finish the dozen...
I was looking into getting some Turkeys and was wandering on what bred would be best for me. I have a small farm with Chickens and Ducks right now and raise for meat and eggs. I was seriously considering Royal Palms but was wandering a few things.
How big do Toms and Hens get?
How many eggs a...
No, I'll be in the turkey woods tryin' to take an Ol' Tom by surprise. I wish I could go I need some layin' hens right now. I am lookin' to breed the BO/RIR crosses back to the Buff Roo I have along with breeding some pure Buffs. but that won't happen til later on... Can't afford the feed at the...
I'm lookin' into cross breeds just because, as with dogs, they're typically the best chicken you're gonna get (unless you breed for SQ of course). I have 3 hens left from a Buff Orp roo over RIR hen cross and I butchered all their brothers a while back, YUM , and they were fairly large. The hens...
