Call duck thread! For posting pics and discussing!

Anybody breeding Calls in the AR/OK/MO intersection area? I'm in NW AR and having trouble finding anybody willing to either sell me a drake or trade me drakes for a hen.

Hello! and welcome to the OEGB thread.

It's not uncommon in chooks with silkie blood in them. :/ But there's not a variety of oe (that I know of, anyway) that's supposed to have it.

d'anver lovers, discuss the breed and post some pics!

Just found out yesterday that the cockerel we got as a chick from Tractor Supply appears to be a quail d'Anver! The wife is insistent that we keep him, but I'm having trouble finding anyone with pullets available. Surely someone else lucked out and got a pullet chick from them, but I guess they...

Hello! and welcome to the OEGB thread.

A little over a month ago, I acquired a black-and-white OEGB rooster. We keep our LF separate from our bantams, and were hoping to get more OEGBs out of him and our wee little crele OEGB hen. He's at the end of his quarantine, and I'm still a little stumped on a few things: Our bantams are...

Lice: .1% Pyrethrin and 1% Piperonyl Butoxide powder?

I recently acquired an OEGB rooster, and he's been in quarantine. He was not kept in good condition at his previous home, and had nails in dire need of trimming, plus he was very dirty, so he got a thorough bath. All the same, we discovered today that he has a terrible infestation of lice. Since...

How do you know when the bugs are gone?

Some types of lice hatch in as little as four days, so repeat treatments are most useful at that interval. That said, frontline probably does not require frequent retreatment the way a spray or powder would.

Dead hen has egg cluster around base of feathers!

I've never seen a chicken do it, but I've seen wild birds dust themselves in my fire ant mounds. I asked an old-timer birdwatcher at church about it, and she said they're getting the fire ants to kill the mites on them. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, it could be why your chicken was...

    egg colours

Yup! Your so-called "Black Star" is actually an EE, though your SLW looks good! Mine lays pretty pale tan eggs, so I'm glad to hear you're getting a heartier color.

    Free range: what's your definition?

If you're not fencing your birds AT ALL, we've gone beyond "free range" and into "allowing domestic animals to roam". If your chickens are able to walk into the road, you're being careless, reckless, and naive. Use your own judgement at the line between free range and cage-free. Personally, I...

Can I feed my Chickens chicken?

There is no known spongiform encephalitis in chickens. Humans, cats, cows, sheep, etc, sure. No such thing in chickens.

Also, you'll want to quarantine them for a while, to make sure they aren't carrying parasites or diseases.

my free range girls always seem to be starving?

If they're completely emptying your feeder, you may need to increase their feed, yes. Try putting in a little more every day, until they aren't able to eat it all. After a while of not being hungry all the time, they'll start to eat a little less.
