I don't get it! People lose chickens left and right do to heat and dehydration, during the Summer months. Yet the handful lost, worldwide, in the Winter months creates ridiculous hysteria.
I had an ongoing fight with our one adult roo for a year and a half! I wouldn't free range without a roo and he was the only one we had. Plus, he was a super awesome rooster, as far as fulfilling his duties to the flock. But I still have some faint scars on my shins, lol.
He did recently get...
I prefer integration while they are still "in egg"
Going "all natural" makes a huge difference, too. Having a good hen brood, hatch and raise your chicks will make them more hardy, better foragers and facilitates integration... Hell hath no fiery like a mama hen scorned. Shell protect those...
It's simple, really. Chickens have been kept by man for hundreds to thousands of years... Without de-icer gadgets, high tech insulation, lamps of any kind; nor the most recent phenomena of commercialized "food"...
One of the biggest mistakes, most often made, is buy chickens that are not ideal...
I just want to add my own personal experiences :-)
We have had roosters fight off dogs and hawks/falcons on multiple occasions. It is truly a breath-taking thing to see, a 9lb rooster flying five feet into the air, as the hawk (or falcon) swoop down, and swings his spurs at the hawk. Wow; is...
They called the Darkling Beetle
If you are transferring the beetles as they emerge; then eventually the first bin will be empty. That is a good time to completely clean in out :-)
Right on, Knox! I am hoping to get some LF Cochins this Spring, specifically for brooding and raising chicks so; its comically ironic to me that you are brooding a Dellie over LF Cochin eggs... LOLz

Mine will be 13 weeks, tomorrow. They are slowly getting their "adult" sounds. No "real" crows yet from the boys; just a half attempt or two, LOLz.

Our experiences with our RIR roo confirms their aggressive nature. I have been attacked multiple times. Even the hens seem to have been stand offish and aggressive. The ol' RIR crone just get a beak full of Dellie feathers this morning The RIR roo we had was an excellent roo. He took...
Spending time with a couple of good lookin' chicks:
I let the Dellies out to free range the other day (for the first time). They had a blast! They especially enjoyed chasing the lil finches, etc, all over the place, lol.
Our ol' RIR roo (and hen) where real rough with the...
A lot depends on your local climate... But... Here are some fast growing, hearty, plants that chickens like and are even good for them:
Comfrey: plant with two foot centers from one to the next
Chickweed: plant as a ground cover beneath the comfrey plants
Duckweed: in a large bin or a "kiddy...
You definitely will want to consider free ranging each breed at different time frames or on alternating days all together. This will help guarantee "clean genes" as far as breed of offspring.
Sounds like the Maran deal falling through ended up being a God-send, and successfully avoided the...
I'm raising chickens for chicken meat and their eggs. Bonus comes in the form of manure for composting and insect control.
Most (but not all) pullets will be kept for the duration of their high egg production years; then soup... A very select few (read 2~3) will be kept longer for breeding...
