Yea, it is weird that others aren't seeing any at all. Tons of free protein! Heading out in a bit to collect more. Rudy the rooster ate probably 20 of them this morning. Crazy chickens were going nuts for them.
We have tons of them here. Last week we saw the holes, then about 4 days ago they started emerging. We have so many of them I just walked around with a bucket and started collecting them off the trees, shrubs and ground. 10 minutes to get about 100. I've been doing it for the past few days...
Cicadas are abundant here! Loud and all over the place. I've been collecting them and giving them to the chickens. They love me even more now! :). Tried to post a video so you can see but can't seem to get it to load.
We picked up 27 chicks on 2/16 from Meyer Hatchery and the only one that died was the free meal maker. 16 Barred Rocks and 9 Rhode Island Reds. All the rest seem to be doing just fine. They are growing fast, trying to fly, feathers popping out and just funny to watch! I must be feeding them...
Well...I got no answers or ideas from anyone so this morning, we culled Hen#1 as she was not getting any better. Last night, I soaked Hen#2 and this morning she layed this monsterous misshapen egg. No wonder she was in trouble the past couple days. So Hen#2 has hopefully recovered. Only time...
When I first joined BYC I searched all thru for the best ways to peel fresh hard-boiled eggs. Only ONE way works every single time...after trying all listed. I've passed this technique on to other friends who have laying hens and they are very happy I told them. So here it is....
1. Boil...
Finally, my 27 week old EE layed an egg. I never thought it would take so much longer than the BR and the Silver Leghorns. It was a little tiny green one. As big as she is, I expect they'll get much bigger. But hey, at least she layed one finally!
Over the past month I introduced 2 hens and then 4 hens to the rest of the flock. Since I picked them up in the morning and the others were already in the run, I actually put them in the coop through the nesting boxes. Each one looked around inside then came out into the run. The original...
I don't have a picture to show you but we did a short box like a tray with 4 inch sides then screwed the upright boards to the inside of the tray and the roost board across that. We did two roosts at two different levels. I did it this way so I can slide the roosting "box" out and just dump...
We had a sudden death of one chicken last year. My hubby and the neighbor were sitting drinking beer watching the chickens, when all of a sudden one just fell over dead. The other chickens were standing around her almost kicking her to get up. Have no idea what happened. An old farmer friend...
I have one hen who was acting similar to yours - always attacking the other 3 hens. Everytime she would go after one and peck it, I would pick her up and hold her as if I was the boss hen. She stopped doing it after a couple weeks of showing her who was the boss.
I don't like using vinegar because I swear I can taste it.
As for the egg whites being rubbery, never noticed it. When I make two dozen deviled eggs, my hubby will eat them all before the guests arrive!
Found the best method on BYC after trying them all:
- Boil water first, then place eggs in - bring back to a boil for 6 minutes
- Turn heat off, put lid on and let sit for 5 more minutes.
- As soon as the timer goes off dump the hot water but do NOT put cold water on them all.
- Only put cold...
no didn't buy them. Had a broody who wouldn't stop being broody so I went to a neighbor and got a variety of eggs from him so she could get over her broodiness. She hatched 6 but one died in an accident (head caught in the fence) and that one WAS A Female! Of the 5 left I believe 4 are boys...
geeze I'm really horrible at this hatching thing - especially if I want pullets!
UUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
Does anyone want all these roos I seem to have? I have a really pretty EE roo too...I know it is because it crowed too!!!
All along I've been thinking that "Professor" is a roo because he/she acted like a roo right from the beginning, but in the past couple days, she is making more "hen" sounds...sounds that are just like my BR Hens and not an attempt at crowing. Not sure what it is....mix of some sort. 11 weeks...
I really like this chicken...very friendly and I'm hoping this 11 week old is a pullet.
What am I?
Am I a Pullet (pretty please)? Even though I'm waiting to hear a crow because that's what I think.
