If the birds are suited for our climate, produce a good amount of eggs, & quiet then looks dont matter much to me. I am more livestock & less pet to be honest.
I am thinking 10 should do for us.
I most likely won't end up butchering any, I'd like to but it's just not a good idea.
There is a wooden fence on one side & a shed on the other, it leaves enough room for ventilation but I've found it blocks the wind nicely.
Legbars & RIR were hitting all my Mark's when I checked earlier too.
I would like to have some to eat, however I live in a city with little outdoor privacy & my neighborhood kids might be traumatized by me butchering :gig
Im in south central, up on the mountain. Winters aren't terrible here...
I don't know but I will be looking into that too. We aren't sure if she's reacting to the chickens, their dust/poop/whatever, or the bedding (we used Aspen, then Pine).
She's eaten chicken & eggs with no problem so we don't think it will be a problem once they are outdoors. Part of the problem...
We recently had to rehome our chicks, having them in the house was causing my daughter's allergies to flare & there was no way to keep them outside at their age in this weather :(
They went to live with a coworker who we know & trust to take care of them.
But! I fully intend to start again in...
You're in Florida? I'm not jealous anymore lol that humidity is not for me.
Back home it rains a lot & I now live in the high desert so it is a take the good with the bad situation I guess, I definitely don't miss the rain! The weather is weird here though, I can be really hot until the wind...
It is 60 today, 23 tonight, 47 tomorrow & 18 tomorrow night, I could take some warm right now :hit It is still in the 80s back home, "move to a mountain" they said lol
It's pretty! :love
My daughter is apparently allergic to chickens & we cannot keep them in the house anymore. Since it is not nearly warm enough to keep them in an unheated coop at this age (2-3weeks & its supposed to be 18°F tomorrow night) I am rehoming them. They are going to a good home with someone we know...
Update: my 6 kept coming back out of the cave in groups of 3-4 at a time. I was worried it might be too warm (as I didn't hear any scuffles to make me think they weren't getting along) since mine haven't been under a heat lamp & have been given no heat except the cave in over a week. So I...
At least I'm not alone  I keep telling the husband we needed a bigger piece of land, maybe now he'll listen!
They are all huddled up in the cave for the night, I'm considering turning it from med to low so they dont get too warm? I've almost doubled the peeps in there.
I went to the co-op today because I'm a glutton for punishment I suppose) & ended up bringing home some new friends, 2 RIR & 2 EE. They look to be about the same age as my group so I tossed them in together & so far so good, they are kore worried about the oats than one another.
My husband has...
We have Vibrant Life Medicated Chick Starter because every place locally was sold out of the Purina Medicated kind. I also have Purina Unmedicated Starter, honestly I use them interchangeably :idunno
