I am trying to decide what breed or breeds of chickens to get

I like my buff orps - sweet girls that have that "traditional chicken" look. Also like my silver spangled hamburgs and golden campines (both are very pretty but "flighty" birds).

Young broody better than old? Mean better than timid?

Ok - two of my 1st year buff orps have gone broody. These girls hatched in early March. Are they just as good potential "moms" as older (1 plus year old) hens? Or should I not let them try to hatch chicks out till next year? Also - one is an absolute bear (pecks, fights, etc. if you try to...

Moving fake eggs out of nest boxes??

Ok - new layers (born first week of March). They have a nice row of nest boxes with a dividing wall in front of them (to make it darker and more private) for them. They go behind the wall and lay - but not into the boxes (I can collect eggs from the outside if they are in the boxes, but not...

    Insect Control

The leaves of tomato, potato, eggplant and pepper plants are toxic to humans (the veggie part is the only part that isn't) but I don't know about birds. I know deer will eat my potato and tomato plants. Most animals (except horses, cows, and humans) won't eat things that are poison to them -...

    Humidity...

If you have a forced air incubator the heat and air flow will dry things out a good bit.

    Which thermometer would you believe?

My Brinsea reads about 1 degree lower than when checked with a Brinsea probe thermometer or a medical thermometer in water. I have mine set at 100.6 to get 99.5 actual reading with the more accurate thermometers.

What is the BEST heat lamp for my $$???

Get a fixture with a dimmer (rheostat sp?) on the cord (available from petsmart, petco, etc.) and a red bulb sized to your brooder (small brooder - 100 watt, large brooder 250 watt) then you can use the dimmer knob to adjust heat down to the right level. You want one with a ceramic bulb...
