Right on with what ruthhope says.
I don’t know about the feather sheaths, but I do know that baby has angel wings and needs to be wrapped up right away!
I like the burrito vet wrap method, and the pantyhose method.
How long has it been since they’ve internally pipped?
Usually I’ll wait 24 hours post internal pip to do safety holes, but you can do them now, if you’d like.
After an internal pip, ducklings take about 24-36 hours to externally pip, and then they take an additional 36-48 hours to hatch.
I’d guess the one you’re holding is a boy.
The one’s making the slight honking sounds might be girls. For girls, the honk will get louder and become a full, loud quack between 6-8 weeks.
Sometimes boys can have the honking at this age, but it’ll fade away quick. For the most part, boys will...
That’s terrible! :(
I’m really glad the consensus is that it isn’t a turtle. I think Blanca will be good as new very soon. She’s still very unbothered by the whole thing.
I’ve been in the pond before. I found some smaller things, like an old bobber & line, and a hammer. But also some larger things like a tire and a metal life guard chair.
The chair was the weirdest, as I’d swam by it’s location multiple times and hadn’t seen or bumped into it once. Was a shocker...
Well that’s nice.. I wasn’t sure what a snapper bite looked like, just that they occur on the belly a lot.
I’m not sure, I think 10+ ft at the deepest.
Lol I would be willing to scuba dive myself if it meant they won’t get anymore belly injuries.
I’m going to get everyone up, make sure no one...
Yes, yes.
It really is a small wound. Not even an inch long, I don’t think.
I would like if it was something simple like that. I’ll go searching around for sharp things later.
I have not seen any poke their heads up. Just pond sliders and once a soft shelled guy that was wandering around...
My poor Blanca is getting all of the injuries here..
I’ve just sent everyone out to free range and noticed my Blanca had what I first thought was a mud stain on her belly that she was picking at. Someone else posted a snapping turtle injury recently, so it got me nervous, and I called her over...
The drake feather is the last sex indicator and won’t appear until after they’re fully feathered. I personally didn’t see them on my drakes until ~12-13 weeks.
If you could get a video of their voices, upload it somewhere else like YouTube, and then link it here, that would be great. You’re...
Sort of, yes.
The Li+ gene from the Rouen is dominant, giving the babies a darker feather coloration overall.
The M^R gene from the Appleyard is dominant, making the babies restricted, but I’ve read restricted on its own is most noticeable in ducklings, not so much as adults.
So, they’ll...
I have a picture of this exact thing, but it’s on a device that I don’t have at the moment!! I’ll try to get it when I can.
They will have the “restricted mallard” coloration. They’ll have the dark cap and tail like an Appleyard duckling, along with some extra dark markings.
I’ve read that...
Drakes will begin mating practice between 3-4 months old, but I’m unsure if they’re fertile or not at that point? Hens will be receptive to mounting early on but usually won’t mature until 5-6 months, sometimes later depending on when they were hatched.
Mating season is thought to be between...
Yellow is a Pekin. Grey billed is a Welsh Harlequin. Black is probably a Cayuga or a Black Runner, but I can’t say for certain without another photo or description.
Welcome to BYC! :frow
Could you post some photos of her? It may be something simple, like she’s about ready for a molt, or she is molting, or maybe she’s lost some water proofing.
For transporting, I’ll either use the hamburger hold - with 2 hands, place your fingers underneath the duck just in front of their legs, and your thumbs over top of their wings. You can pin their legs between 2 of your fingers to prevent scratching.
Or the football hold - place 1 hand...
