I thought I knew what type of chick I had.

Sorry, nothing helpful to contribute. That's neat! I thought Cinnamon Queens usually had a little "collar" so to speak. Can they not?

    Silkie Color Genetics

More than that, they're missing a nail and the end of 3 digits are larger & rounder. It's clearly hereditary since more than one of them had it. Just curious if it's a common Silkie thing or what. I know! I just thought it was neat that they had more than one chick with a single comb.

    Silkie Color Genetics

Dad was solid buff, mom was solid black. Another weird part of the babies are that some have clubbed toes and two of them somehow have single combs???

    Chicken! Girl or boy?

Female, and I agree you do need to get her away from your birds. Massive health risk.

    Making Friends, Meeting Peeps

Neat! Good luck with the Coast Guard life @Evadig. Have you lived near water most of your life? The flexibility certainly is nice. And it's a practice IACUC protocol, which is Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and that committee is responsible for approving and maintaining the...

    Silkie Color Genetics

This is exactly the coloration that my friend's bird has! And they all hatched black also, gradually developing the buff over time... I don't have the time to really absorb what has been said in the rest of the thread but I may have questions if it wasn't answered what your Silkie was lol

They didn't say anything about looking a gift cow in the mouth!

    Making Friends, Meeting Peeps

Totally understandable @Evadig . I wish you luck in that endeavor! If you don't mind my asking, any reason you picked Coast Guard in particular? Also, just for my own life update, currently writing a research protocol for chickens. LOL!

    Silkie Color Genetics

Wow, that's really neat!! Where did you learn all this? I'd love to read more about it and get a more comprehensive understanding, but not a clue where to begin. =] @Amer

    Is this a true Ameraucana?

I agree with Amer. Doesn't match any color accepted by Ameraucana SOP + from TSC, so likely not Ameraucana lol.

    Silkie Color Genetics

So it is incomplete dominance between Extended Black and Wheaten? Any reason why the buff might be concentrated around the neck and keel?

    Silkie Color Genetics

I don't want to post a picture of his birds without his knowledge, but my friend has a bunch of Silkies that had a black mother and a buff father... and they all came out black with buff "collars" and some more buff feathering on their bellies. Could anyone explain why that is? Incomplete...

Could this be a boy? It's a Rhode Island Red. About 5 weeks.

Yeah plus just noticed the dark pattern on his feet. I don't think it's dirt but if it is, shhh. I'm not wearing my glasses and it's 1:40 am for me

A 6 week old chick, with an upside-down head?!?

This looks like a case of wry neck to me, which is usually a Vitamin E deficiency though sometimes can be from selenium if I'm remembering correctly. I'm a bit of an insomniac, so sorry for the late tag @Eggcessive but you're better with Vitamin stuff/recommending supplements from what I've seen...

Could this be a boy? It's a Rhode Island Red. About 5 weeks.

Yeah, not a RIR. I'd agree with @townchicks though the muffs seem a bit small. And looks like maaaybe sickle feather development? But I forget when that's supposed to start. Some sort of mixed breed cockerel.

    Hello

Silkie and Cochin mixes?? That sounds adorable-- please share more pics! And man, how dreamy... I hope to have the space for that many one day (though sorry you had to downsize!) Welcome to BYC!

    Making Friends, Meeting Peeps

I totally agree with everything you said! EEs have to be my 2nd favorite, but they're extremely close behind Silkies. Honestly I'd say they're tied for first (which was why getting Silkied EE crosses was such a fantastic present, ha...) Plus they're generally such friendly, hardy birds in my...
