Silkie Color Genetics

This is exactly the coloration that my friend's bird has!

And they all hatched black also, gradually developing the buff over time... I don't have the time to really absorb what has been said in the rest of the thread but I may have questions if it wasn't answered what your Silkie was lol
That is so crazy! I haven’t ever seen another silkie that looked like my girl. So the parents were buff and black? Did the black parents look solid black or did they have leakage? Could there have been one randomly colored hen that produced those chicks? I am so intrigued!! I posted my bird because I thought it sounded similar to what your friend had. Super cool!

Dad was solid buff, mom was solid black. Another weird part of the babies are that some have clubbed toes and two of them somehow have single combs???

Interesting about the clubbed toes - are they just missing a nail or is it more than that?

If a few have single combs, then both parents carry the gene for single comb. It is recessive, so it will only show up if they get it from both parents.

More than that, they're missing a nail and the end of 3 digits are larger & rounder. It's clearly hereditary since more than one of them had it. Just curious if it's a common Silkie thing or what.

I know! I just thought it was neat that they had more than one chick with a single comb.

Interesting! I haven’t seen that in any of my silkies before. But I have had a couple of chicks pop up that were missing a toenail. And it seems like I had one once with a smaller outermost toe, like shorter than the rest. Maybe it is the polydactyl gene that can cause some of these abnormalities? Not sure. It hasn’t been very common from what I have seen.
