    Feeding shells back...remove membrane, why?

On the odd occasion I find a cracked or broken egg in the coop, I just throw it on the ground so it breaks into pieces and the chickens have at it. They've never chocked and they don't eat their own eggs otherwise.

    Dead Mice

The last few days I've caught about a dozen mice in a spring loaded mouse trap (the kind that kills them). Somehow they're getting into the pantry at night. I have been flushing them down the toilet, but couldn't I just feed them to my chickens? We don't us any poisions, but I don't know what...

    Still alive!

...both the chickens & myself. I apologize I haven't been around for several months, but I've been dealing with some serious health issues. Frankly, I didn't feel like talking with anyone. In the time I've been gone my one hold out went into molt it's first fall. I was convinced I would never...

    Vitamins in water...

Looking at the ingredients, they're already included in most store bought chicken feeds, except the flak seed if you're not using a Omega-3 enhanced feed. While it won't harm them, as long as you follow the directions, it's unnecessary. Personally I'd save it for emergencies or boost for shipped...

    Extra Carbs - Cold climates

You want to put on muscle not fat. Muscle is a better insulator than fat. Carbs are high in calories and low in nutrition, while protein enhances muscle mass.

    Winterizing ... Close coop floor?

Would the chickens get a draft and chilled with the opening? If not it might help with ventilation and air movement.

When do chickens develop their GPS/homing sense?

I'd try locking them down in the coop for about a week.

    Chicken Prozac?

You're best bet is to spend as much time as you can sitting with them. Eventually she'll get used to you. When they get near laying age they typically calm down, will squat and let you handle them. My BRs became slightly flighty after about 8 weeks until they got close to lay. Now they're very...

    6 am Wake Up Call

Hopefully it was just the feral cat & her kittens that my mother likes to feed when she comes by . No way they can get in, so they're not really a threat, just slightly annoying.

    6 am Wake Up Call

Either an "egg song" or predator alert, can't really tell the difference. When I went to check on them all seemed normal except the one in the nest box. Don't know if she slept there or not, first time I've seen anyone in the nest box not during daylight. ETA: Last night was a full or near full...

We got our first egg! But.....

It took my girls about two weeks to stop dropping "rubber eggs" under their roost. Now they're laying perfect large brown eggs :D.

    6 am Wake Up Call

At about 6 this morning I was rudely woken up by the chickens making a ruckus; more than an hour before light and two hours before I usually let them out (this time of year). I immediately went down, checked the outside of the run & coop with no signs of predators. Opened up the coop with four...

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

Yeah, fortunately last winter was pretty mild. The weather's been a bit strange and a lot wetter than normal. Typically when summers are wetter it carries over to winter with a wet & cold winter. Snow doesn't really melt off until spring melt here so having several feet of snow can be a PITA all...
