I agree, they arent a pure solution to the problem, but IMO, they seem to be working still! I haven't had a problem in months. But then again, I also trapped for awhile, but haven't got one ina few months in a trap either! Either I killed them all or scared them away either way, for the price...
yeah, I'd agree, you're coons and coyotes are your concern! I'd start trapping for the ASAP, as they will eventually get to your girls. Unless ya keep them in a predator proof coup at night.
Don't give up! sounds like raccoons, they'll just eat the heads, although they're usually strong enough to get where and what they want! I'd rec getting some Duke dog proof traps and getting rid of the buggers, and then get some more birds! Sorry for your losses!
So kinda knew my chicks were laying but couldn't find the eggs, till today! They are laying them under my bean stalks! Found 6 can't wait to see how many more I will find! Now to get them to lay in the nest boxes on the coupe;) guess that's what ya get for free ranging! I hate to lock them up...
I agree that this isn't a complete solution to a problem, locking your girls up is the best, but my results are great so far. Before the night guard, my food got ate every night and they were obviously trying to get in, and I was trapping coons like crazy!!!
Since the night guard, I've trapped...
I saw a neat idea the other day on here. You basically get really strong fishing line and run it in lines over your coup area. The idea is that hawks and other birds of prey need a long "swooping" area to get the birds and will get stopped by the line. You can hang tinsle or such over it, and...
good luck! I'd try some traps over the electric fence. I've had most luck with the dukes dog prof trap, $20 and it works alot better than a live trap. And keep that dog away from them, it doesn't stand a chance against a coon, and I'd hate to see her get rabies:( I just shot a 35# coon the other...
My girls go to the coup and roost religiously about 30 minutes before sunset, and so I just let them go and lock them up right at sunset. That way I get to watch the sunset and get them locked up, win win.
I like Dukes DP traps the best, but THEY ARE DEF NOT HUMANE, every coon I get has a compound fracture that they start chewing on, and I check the trap frequently. But they work a ton better for me, my suburban coons are way too smart to go in a live trap, they just beat the crap out of the cage...
yupp, I literally have 4 hives less than 10 feet from my coup but on the opposite side of a privacy fence. Even if the chickens are snagging a few bees, they only live 30 days anyways so not a big loss. Most bees travel 3-5 miles collecting pollen and nectar
nice info everyone, thank you! While I like my chicken nipples, its becoming obvious the birds like other methods for water better! I guess I will buy one of these! I'm glad I'm viewing these chickens more as pets than a cost saving plan, because they are getting PRICY! lol spoiled chickens
