Professional Necropsy - what does this mean?

Thank you so much for the helpful response! I'll keep a close eye on the rest of the flock but I won't worry too much. Sounds like it could be a one off and all caused by the egg yolk in her cavity then? UC Davis is a veterinary college and they do not do interpretation of the results. I...

Professional Necropsy - what does this mean?

I had a hen die suddenly so took her to UC Davis for a full necropsy. I've done this a few times when younger birds die and I've never had any major surprises on the results. But this one I really don't understand at all. Seems to me like all kinds of bacterial infections? Can anyone tell me if...

Keep or cull cockarels with new batch of pullets?

This is very helpful, thank you! You're right of course, it will be 6 months until our new chicks are mature, and mature roosters are easy enough to acquire.

Keep or cull cockarels with new batch of pullets?

Our main guy is 3 yo, the cockerels is 6 months old. Our adult rooster tolerates the younger one well enough until he tries to mount a hen. Will he be given "breeding rights" as he matures do you think?

Keep or cull cockarels with new batch of pullets?

I have a flock of about 12 hens and 4 roosters. We've only ever had one roo but 3 cockerels hatched last spring and have started getting amorous. This seems to stress out our main man and the girls don't seem to like them much either. We planned to cull all 3 new roos. But, we just ordered a...

Poop all over hatching eggs - what to do??

As of this momoing, both that egg and another are open but nothing is coming out :( The chicks inside do not appear to be moving or breathing, but the hen is still very much wanting to sit on them and the other two unhatched eggs. I think the three chicks that hatched is all we will get, but I'm...

Poop all over hatching eggs - what to do??

Okay, I just did and though i was so careful, I cracked one :( Just a small Crack (maybe it was already close to hatching?). I don't hear anything but I do see a chick in there, moving up and down with each breath. I cleaned out the box, added fresh straw, and just stuck the egg back under her 😕

Poop all over hatching eggs - what to do??

We have a first time broody who has been sitting on 8 eggs for the last 22 days. Three have hatched. I keep checking on her, and she is still insistent on sitting in her broody box. I just checked on her again and I think she has had one of her massive poops - but it is all over the rest of the...

What is wrong with our rooster's foot??

Thank you so much for the advice and the specific instructions! I will get started on this treatment this weekend.

What is wrong with our rooster's foot??

Thank you, we have never dealt with mites before. If it was scaly leg, wouldn't the hens be experiencing the same? I will look for Ivermectin; we have a Collie so do not keep it around. Would DE work? I will oil him up too.

What is wrong with our rooster's foot??

There is nothing on his face, and the girls are all fine (although a couple of them have had fowl pox already).

What is wrong with our rooster's foot??

Hello, thank you in advance for reading this. We have 1 rooster and 4 elderly hens. I don't usually get too close to the rooster because he's a typical rooster, but today I happened to look at his feet and noticed something off. At bed time when he was calm we took a few pictures. Any idea...

    Cornish X w/black feathers?

That's a good question, I really don't know. I will have to call now and find out :) I usually just call the local feed store and they put an order into "the hatchery". Glad to hear they turned out okay for you and I notice the same so far - they are 5 weeks and look anatomically the same...

    Cornish X w/black feathers?

Hello, This is my second time raising Cornish X and this time around, I have a few birds that have black feathers here and there. When I google "Cornish X w/black feathers" nothing at all comes up to indicate this is a normal variation. Do you think I did not get actual Cornish X this time...

    Tray ideas for homemade waterer?

I went to Tractor Supply today and realized, the black rubber will probably make the water too hot in the Summer :( We get into the 100's here and it will be in the shade, but still. I will see if I can find a clear plastic saucer, thanks blackdog! And thanks ronott, but I am specifically...

    Tray ideas for homemade waterer?

Hi, I made a waterer from a 6 gallon bucket and a serving tray under it. The serving tray is a perfect size to hold the water, and was inexpensive, but unfortunately it is made from aluminum and it seems the aluminum is degrading and I don't think that is healthy for them to be drinking now...

    Naked Patch on Back

Perhaps I'll make a hen saddle for her to wear until the rest of my "older" flock start to lay again in the Spring. I'm a little handy with a sewing machine. I'm afraid the bully might be a newly-laying hen and I don't want to lose the eggs these next couple of months :-/ After that I'm okay...

How do you deworm a chicken and how often is one suppose to do that?

I have, about 9 months ago actually, because a bird was not acting well, it was negative. I've also taken a couple of birds over the years in for necropsies and there was never a mention of finding worms. I've never seen anything that looked like a worm when butchering either. But thank you...
