Well she is still sitting in her box. Drinking a little but not moving. I just wish there was something I could do for her. I wish a vet could look at her but my vet doesn't look at farm animals. It just seems like that swollen thing should be taken out. Maybe an infected egg is caught inside.
She is just sitting. The abdomen is hanging and I lifted it and it's heavy. It seems like a hernia. Poor thing. I went into the carriage house/coop and there was a pile of white feathers! The others must have attacked her. She was hiding under the stairs to the loft.
She is now in a...
I haven't posted here for awhile because all was going well with my 9 chickens.
But one white has had a droopy rearend for a few months now. She was acting ok though and eating well. But last two days she is sitting down a lot. Her poor rearend is drooping like a bag beneath the vent...
It is supposed to be ok if they eat it. I use a kitty litter scoop and pick up the poo from the Dry Stall this way. It works great. Keeps smells down as well. Just make sure it is the harmless kind if eaten.
I had a few pasty butt issues too and just wetted their bottom with a wet paper towel with lukewarm water with tap water running in bathroom sink.Just takes a few minutes and poo softens and comes off. They don't mind if you are gentle. I wouldn't pull it off.
My chickens are now inside in their coop which is inside a part of a carriage house. I put down thick straw on the floor. I put the cookie tin warmer on underneath the hanging waterer. That's about all that we do. We are in Southern Ontario where it can get pretty cold. Last winter they...
I have the cookie tin heater as well and I just plugged it in this past week as we are into frigid temps already. I have a 25W bulb in the tin and have it sitting on ceramic tiles on the floor just under the hanging plastic waterer. The tin and waterer just barely touch but there is enough...
I am so sorry to hear about your poor chicken. I don't know how I would get rid of mine if and when the time comes. I know I couldn't do them in myself at all. I think I would call a farmer to have him take the chicken or chickens.
I put a 25 watt bulb in a cookie tin. Drilled a couple of holes in it for air circulation. Waterer hangs just above it and works perfectly to keep water from freezing. I used this all winter last year during the polar vortex! Never gets hot. Just lightly warm.
It's plugged in outside...
I used the pinless peepers also. Didn't really work but it helped for awhile. I took them all off for the summer but some are really being picked again.
I'm going to order the butterfly saddles next. To hopefully help the worst ones from being plucked bare!
My brown chickens are still being picked on badly. The one is especially bad but I think she annoys the others as she acts strangely and has a terrible sounding cluck. Very croaky. Her neck and thighs are bare and her back and base of tail. Unsightly. Poor thing. Pinless peepers didn't...
I am just wondering if anyone has bought coats for chickens. I know this sounds strange but I am wanting to try it to stop the feather picking. My brown chickens are the worst and nothing has worked so far. I am envisioning something that could be velcroed on so easy to put on and remove and...
