Flora Vale Fowl Rise & Shine Pallet Coop reporting in!
I wrote a big build blog article out when I finished it several years ago.
We're professional artists and craftspeople and we think our coop says that!
So here it is all the details...
Oh no. It's a hunk of living skin. It will bleed. I am certain of it. She won't like, neither will I, but she will certainly feel a lot of pain, etc. It's the size of wattle. So, imagine cutting one of those off! With feathers. But the resulting wound will only be a half inch big. We can stop...
We had a girl get scalped by the rooster. Upon review we learned this happens. We were out of town. Our chicken sitter covered it in Blu-kote and put her in our isolation pen, attached to the run. She has healed up nicely, the skin grew back and feathers came in. The "nursery" as we call has an...
It's been ages in coming, but I wanted to share my final, finished, and updated Coop Build article. The Rise & Shine Coop for Flora Vale Farmstead has taken a year and half to complete, but well worth it. With the roof finally on, and the tarps finally off, the build article could be written. So...
Yes, I had that feeling. Sigh. My little girl isn't going to be happy. Hell, I ain't happy. I mean, if he grows up to be a perfect gentleman, and we could socialize with him just like we get to with the ladies currently....like THAT'S gonna happen!
Thank you.
Anyone else, please feel free...
Dixie, our one surviving chick from a clutch of fertile eggs hatched just after we culled it's father, with it's adopted mother, Ditzy. So hoping it's a pullet, as we would love to keep it, but loving not having a roo these days. Let us know your opinion.
Memento Mori.
He was a good boy and did his job, but, was too aggressive to humans, and had to go. If you would like to make donations, in his memory, to help the hens get by in their time of loss, please send them via PayPal to Mythicaldesigns at gmail dot com. Donations will go towards...
Ahh...was searching away. Just found this thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/619133/what-is-best-way-to-remove-rooster-feathers-that-i-will-be-giving-to-a-beauty-salon-when-i-am-killing-roosters-for-the-freezer
So, we have a roo. He needs to go. Reasons are various. We both have skills and although this will be our first bird to process, I have worked with animals and hunted a lot. So the killing and processing isn't the question.
It's the best way to save the feathers for processing. We are crafts...
Yes, we do temporary runs for the day a lot. Just run some wire and netting, etc. However, the answer to "What Chicken Predators do you have?" for us, is "All of them" including 2 legged ones. Yep. Appalachian mtns. Coons, Skunks, Possums, Weasels, Bobcats, Bears, Cats, Dogs, Coyotes, Hawks...
Yes, about the Roo. He is going. We had thought to keep him until we were done integrating. I know they can be an assistant to that. Line all the ladies up and tell them he thinks their pretty and shouldn't fight. He is rough with us, but we manage him, however, don't want him around, as we...
So, we've read all the best articles, and talked to our fellow chicken keeping friends, and now, we are asking ya'll.
The situation is. We have a two flocks. One a collection of 1 yr. olds, hens and one slightly mean rooster. The other, a clutch of six 8 week old pullets. We have a wknd events...
The Story Thus Far.....
Current flock is one year old. Four hens, one Roo. (Two leghorn hens, two Golden Laced Wyandottes, GLW Roo) The roo, my Little John, is the only other male on our property, and I like him lots. He is a good rooster...mostly. Good to the girls, and, well, protective of...
Hi folks.
We done the usual searches here, and haven't quite found the answer.
We have a hen, a white leghorn, with saddle back. She is fine, just a little worn. One of four hens in the coop with the rooster, and perhaps his favorite and dominate hen, so....you know what happens. It's been a...
If you read extensively, across the boards, from all the old timer experienced poultry keepers, you'll find that don't recommend any heating at all. It dangerous, for your birds and you.
Just a little tour to share of our set up. Posting from far western Maryland, in the mountains above Mount Savage, at about 1900 ft. Blowing snow and blustery winds, and deep cold and things are comfy.
We have three sides of our coop in 4 Mil plastic and layered with lathe. I used scrap lumber to step the side out over the flower bed at the base. We had grown green beans in there during the summer, and they climb up the side and even into the run. The birds get the beans. We planted peas in it...
