    Mystery chick joined the brooder

Lol, no idea where it came from. I find it hard to believe that both myself and the employee didn't notice a different breed and extra bird in the box, but it is possible. I've had multiple broody hen, but they weren't good enough at it to hatch chicks. They kept switching nesting boxes!

    Mystery chick joined the brooder

I have a mystery chick and am hoping someone can identify. I got 18 Cornish X chicks from Tractor Supply last weekend. The other day, I found a chick outside the brooder, wandering the yard. I put it back in the broader, figuring one of the chicks Houdini-ed it's way out. The only thing...

Happy Friday-eve, all - I built my coop in the springtime and it is about 80% hardware cloth on the outside. This was great for the ladies in the summer, but fall and winter are fast approaching and I would like to add some draft control. I have a ton of 6' fence pickets to repurpose. My...

I didn't find any yesterday, so either they're fantastic egg-hiders...or no one laid. Only time will tell :) Huggstaff13 - how are you fastening the wood to the frame? Nuts/bolts?

Howdy all! Some of my little ladies (born 3/15) finally started laying! I have no idea how many are laying, but at least a few are. My dog discovered a few eggs in a nest in the brush on Sunday. Woot! On Monday morning, I found one egg on the floor of the coop. On Tuesday, I found one in...

Happy weekend, all! When I first got my pullets in April, one of my dogs went NUTS and was constantly circling the open air kennel. I feared my dreams of free ranging were over! I'm happy to report that after a few weeks, he has more than chilled out: The barn cat we acquired also doesn't...

Perhaps this is a dumb question...but I'll ask it anyway! If we keep the coop open during the day for the chickens to get out...there's no way to ever prevent snakes from entering, right? Or is more that we keep the coop secure and sealed during the night when the snakes are most active?

He brought the snake to work for some other guy to make a belt, so at least it is getting used somehow. Now my BF - who couldn't give a hoot about the chickens - is suggesting we get Guinea Fowl. To me, the more the merrier...but now I have a whole other bird to research!

I think mine are too small yet to win in a chicken/cat fight - they're about 9 weeks old. I'm not going to build an entire roof tonight, so I guess we'll see how tomorrow goes. Hopefully no losses.

Last night after finishing my sweet outdoor run that will keeps dogs out (but not worried about keeping chickens in), we found this next to the house: He was almost 5'...gorgeous, but scary. He's dead in this photo, obviously, or I wouldn't be that close! My BF just told me he's coming home...

It's not really like the deep litter method (from what I understand about deep litter). Basically, it's just a bunch of construction sand on the floor of the coop. My coop/inside run is 12'x8', and that's all sand. I use a kitty litter scoop to sift the poop from the sand and dump into a trash...

I have a sand base and scoop in the morning and at night...and sometimes another time. I'm freakish about poop, though.

Thanks, Tammy. I let them free range for the first time today...I'm a nervous chicken mommy! To compound that, I will be home later than normal - gotta pick up some free chicken wire that someone's giving me after work! I'm really hoping that more space will help! Silly question...what's a...

After seeing that my 9-weekers are starting to peck, peck, peck one another...I receive a kick in the pants to get busy on coop adjustments this weekend! Today, I installed a poop board and roost, which also creates another shade structure. If only the ladies would sleep on the roost instead of...
