Posting pictures of your chickens and asking what they are will probably be the best way to get an idea of what breeds you have. No, they don't peck at it at all, I am thinking of just taking it out. Last year I had one for my other batch of chicks and they loved it so I bought another one this year, but these chicks are not enjoying it. Welcome to BYC! Your chicks are so adorable. Just an FYI your chicks are not ameracaunas they are most likely Eater eggers, they will still lay green/blue eggs and will be beautiful, friendly birds. You will have so much fun with your new chicks!- Bloveschickens

Make sure your coop is very predator proof and close up their door at night, and you shouldn't have a problem, unless predators come out during the day (such as hawks) There are a lot of threads/articles on here about how to build an extremely predator proof coop.- Bloveschickens
