    Struggling to identify these

Well, 4 weeks later and I have an update. The first one I believe is a cream legbar...and probably a rooster. The second looks like it is a Rhode Island Red (in the picture below together) and the third lady is becoming the most beautiful speckled Sussex...I think (second picture)

    Winter Chicks

I just had 21 chicks arrive from Meyer Hatchery to Colorado. It was middle of November and they arrived at 48 hours after hatch, all alive. I did lose 3 the next 3 nights due to my setup in the garage wasn't warm enough and we had a blizzard with 16 inches of snow and freezing temps. Changed...

    No eggs for 10 days

Sorry, I tried to attached the photo with my phone, but it wouldn't do. Let me try again here. The hens are just over one year old, we live in Colorado and I do not free range due to dogs and birds of prey in the area. Their run area is 8x8 wire top and 3x3 covered roof attached to the coop...

    No eggs for 10 days

I was giving them a handful of "chicken crack" this winter as a treat. But, this winter normally they are fed about a sandwich sizes bag of spent grains from a local brewery. Plus, free layer feed available any time. I have cut the sandwich sized bag of spent grains in half. But, once the...

    No eggs for 10 days

One of my Barred Rock hens died expectantly about 25 days ago. She was the head hen in charge. Looked like hemorrhagic fatty liver. There was a little "reorganizing" of the flock after her death. However, my other Barred Rock, hasn't laid an egg in 10 days and has only laid 4 eggs since the...

    Dead Barred Rock

Yes, I have oyster shell and grit available at all times. The research I've done on spent grains shows they are high in protein, up to 20%. So I was hoping this was a great and free alternative to feeding my hens.

    Dead Barred Rock

Went out this morning to find one of my chickens dead. My husband opened her up and found a large clot in and around her liver. Everything else looked fine. Fair amount of fat around her bottom, no egg bound. I feed my four ladies one sandwich bag full of spent grains from the local breweries...

Two of my Welsummer hens have started growing spurs! What is that about? They are 10 months old and are laying an egg almost every day. Is this normal?

Do your girls fight over nest boxes?

My ladies are doing this fighting over one box. I have 4 hens (2 BR 2 wellsummers) and 3 nesting boxes. They usually lay in the same nest, or the secondary nest. The third box has never had a egg in it! The one lady (wellsummer) paces and sings her egg song the whole time the other is laying...
