Hi everyone,
I have a 1-year old wyandotte hen, she grew to a normal adult size just like all of her brothers and seemed perfectly healthy until this last winter. When it was really cold out I noticed she seemed to be "huddling" (puffed up with head in) more than the others. But other than...
Hatching has BEGUN! Officially the hatch date is tomorrow, but before I left for work this morning there were 6 eggs pipped already! Who knows, I might have some little Araucana fluffballs bouncing around the incubator sometime tonight!
Hi there,
My bet would be that Lucy is a pullet.
Duckwing cockerels are completely different in color than pullets. Often (though not always) you can tell the difference at hatching -- the males usually have very distinct striping (most commonly yellow down with black stripes) whereas...
Columbo and Deja are both Golden Duckwing cockerels. Their current color pattern (or lack thereof) is juvenile plumage. You'll see the adult pattern start to emerge within the next couple months -- cream colored hackle & saddle, cream and/or red shoulder (probably more red by the looks of it)...
Thank you Victoria.
In theory I would like to get a livestock dog (I am particularly partial to the Great Pyrenees, had those as a kid), but to be honest with myself a dog on top of everything else is probably more than I can handle.
The three birds I got from Steve all died years ago. But...
Thanks everyone for the sympathy and encouragement!
I'm glad my website has been a good source of information and inspiration... sadly, it has been neglected and is in sore need of update!
To answer your question, Illia, I have only about 20 Araucanas left after the coyote attack -- almost...
My family eats asparagus like crazy and it grows well in our garden. Last year I read about a special variety of asparagus called "Larac Asparagus" and I'd really like to try some! Only problem is, I can't find it ANYWHERE. Apparently Territorial Seed used to carry it, but no longer. I've...
Uh... if that makes any sense at all!
I'd like to raise some birds specifically for meat, that will be of a decent size for butchering before they get tough. HOWEVER, I don't want anything that's bred to eat itself to death given the opportunity (cornish cross etc). Any ideas?
Awww thanks! No worries, I'm sure I can recover the flock in... a few... years.
Ok, how about I don't think about how long it will take... the important part is that all the right genes are still in there somewhere! I just need to get them all to combine properly!
Hello again fellow Washingtonians! Just checking in again after a long absence from BYC.
I've got an Araucana hatch due on the 6th, and I'm picking up a dozen Marans chicks from Lisa & Gary Cree (also Washingtonians) later this month. Anyone else got chicks on the way?
Please safe in this...

Howdy, Araucana peeps! Just thought I'd drop in and say hi. I developed a pretty nice flock after about 5 years of breeding, only to have all my best birds killed by a pack of coyotes a couple months ago. It was such a devastating loss at first I thought of giving up on the breed...

Although it contains its fair share of inaccuracies (including the statement that I've only bred one show quality bird -- what I said was that my BEST show quality bird was eaten by a coyote!), this was a cool little local...
Not yet, I tried to go out & get a full pic of the BLUE laced reds (not the SPLASH laced, as you pointed out!). There are actually two of them. One is so big I almost butchered her last month thinking she was a rooster! But it's getting really windy here which makes them skittish and they...
I did get one front pic of one of the SLW hens, but not a very good one (and I think this was the hen with the worst lacing in front, the others have more rounded lacing in front I think). But here it is:

Thank you for the critique Illia! I never would have guessed! I will try to get a full pic of her... I didn't even photograph her before because her lacing looked messed up to me. Shows how little I know!!!
Hi Wyandotte Experts,
I need a wyandotte critique! I've never raised wyandottes before, but this spring I hatched some silver laced and some BLRW from a breeder who is supposedly pretty good, though now I can't remember her name for the life of me. Anyhow, I got a male and a couple females of...
