Ermine is the color, named after a rodent of that color.
American Erminette is a breed, with unique co-dominent white and black feathers. Ameraucana is a different breed that has one color as a base with ermine spangles of another color over the top. Genetically entirely different.
Not quite. Just as BBS Langshan have a predictable breeding pattern, so too Erminette have a coloration genetics that are predictable.
Breed a black hen to a white rooster and you get all Ermine color with spots, and so forth
E = Ermine, B= black, W=white.
E + E = W B E E, best for a...
Matt hemmer of Salina Kansas did great work in developing the breed. I got eggs from him and chicks from Sand hill, and have been merrily hatching about 300 each year.
American Erminetta, from Curt burroughs book

Ameraucana, which lays blue green eggs, has entirely different genetics then American Erminette. Its a different breed, and Erminette have unique co-dominent black and white genes.
Most of my orginal stock came from Sand hill: black and white. But over the years, occasionally a hint of gold shows up, which I would cull. But two years ago, a gorgous Caramel/White rooster with splashes of black showed up, with a matching hen. Too pretty to cull, so now I breed two...
2026: here in Wyoming I raise about 300 Erm chicks for selective breeding to improve the flock. In the past I would cull any hint of red/gold, but two years ago, when I was not looking the flock presented me with a gorgous RED/GOLD ermine roo and a hen. Fate? So now I have a mostly red/white...
2026: in Wyoming I raise both a red line and a black line of American Erminette, raising 300 chicks or so for selection, selling some, selling a lot of hatching eggs. I have three breeding groups, and they are spectacular, more brilliantly spangled the photos above. Send a message if...
America Erminette is a genetically unique America breed, with co-dominant black and white. You photo is of Americauna, with ermine color --- entirely different.
Matt Hemer sold off his RED/white erminette flock to Hoovers, but they are not in production or selling yet. He may still be selling black/white. Smokey Buttes Ranch. Glenn Drowns at Sand Hill Preservation Center in Iowa took in Curt Burroughs flock and is selling them. The three Erminette...
Curt Burrough's book on Erminette is on Amazon for around $20. The breed website is www.americanerminette/weebly.com
There is also a facebook page, and new breed association, and listing with Livestock conservatcny is under way.
Erminette come in Black, White, and spotted. For maximum spotted chicks, one breeds a black to a white. You really do need to keep a black rooster around to keep the line functional. For other outcomes, the breeding works like this: with B - black, W - White, and E - the spotted ones.
E +...
Wyoming: Cabin on the Pond has a growing flock, with foundation birds from both Matt Solomen of Smokey Butte Ranch in Salina Kansas, and Glenn Drowns at Sand Hill Preservation Center in Calamus Iowa, the two largest breeders. My focus is on Black Roosters, White and deeply black spotted hens...
Where was the shipment from? Midwest, or Southern CA. A huge duck hatchery came on line in CA, and the shipping and connections have been a disaster, with shipments just going into circles between CA and Denver. .
Sand hill does a lot of trying to save old breeds. Hense, if one orders mixed American, one gets mixed american, probably from trying to cross to inprove vigor in a dying breed. They do keep their pure stock seperate from the experiments, but don't expect pure breed if you order "mix."
American Erminette are a genetically co-dominate. If you breed two spotted birds together, on average you get one white, one black, and two spotted. They all are Erminette breed.
If you want a maximum of spotted chicks, breed a white to a black; generally on average all four chicks will be...
