Starting to think she's the Speckledy

    What is this 6-week-old?

    Looking like she's a Speckledy.

    What is this 6-week-old?

I believe that is what this chick is according to the woman who answered the feed store phone. I know she has a lot of chickens. A Speckledy is a cross between a Maran and a Rhode Island Red.

Can I add my 4 weeks old chicks to my 6 weeks old chicks?

I have a group of 11 that range from 4-6 weeks, and no issues. I think if they were older it would be more of a problem. When they get introduced to the main flock is when I'd be a lot more cautious.

    What is this 6-week-old?

Trying to figure out what breed this chick is. Last of the chicks at my local feed store, decided to take home a dozen. I know what 8 of them are, but this one has thrown me off. It should be from those 2 lists. Anyone want to take a guess?

    Plucked Barnevelder

She seems perfectly normal in every other way. She eats and drinks, isn't being henpecked. We don't have a rooster. It's just weird that it's only her 🤷

    Plucked Barnevelder

Anyone know what's going on here? I have 12 chickens all on the same diet, as well as free ranging, and all in the same run at night. She's not pecked by the others; she's pretty assertive. Not sure why the naked chest...?

4 week old Cream Legbar and/or Welbar Chicks side-by-side

Welp, the chicken I thought was a Welbar due to no crest is now laying, yup, blue eggs😂 as far as I can tell, there's no crest. The one with the gold mantle hasn't started laying yet, but can't wait to see what color she lays.

Cream Legbar cross chicks (Maran X and Barred Plymouth Rock X), sexing and colour genetics?

I have an Olive Egger that was hatched on May 20th, 2023. She looked a lot like chick number seven and eight when she was one day old. She now looks like a tufted Cream Legbar crossed with a Barred Plymouth Rock, although I don't actually know what the breeds were that created the cross.

    Lopsided Barnevelder pullet

She moves well when she's walking around, but I'll do that this morning. She does keep both of her wings up (looks normal) when she walks around. It's only when she's resting that she suddenly becomes lopsided.

    Lopsided Barnevelder pullet

Hello all. I have a Barnevelder pullet (have had her since day 1). I notice that she is built very differently to my other breeds, so wasn't too concerned about how she looks until recently. She seems to be lopsided. I know the breed typically has higher-set wings, but she appears to have her...

4 week old Cream Legbar and/or Welbar Chicks side-by-side

So now I have the roo or pullet question 🤪. My last 2 Welbars, same age, same hatchery, looking so different. I realize that as crosses they can look very different, but can anyone tell if both are pullets? They were hatched on March 30, so they are now 3 months old

    Thoughts on Roosters??

I think it depends on the rooster, the neighborhood, and the proximity of the crowing to the neighbors. Remember that backyard chicken flocks aren't just on farms and large ranches. In the neighborhood where I live, we're all people with regular daytime jobs. Pretty much all of us have chickens...

    Thoughts on Roosters??

I actually feed the hawks gophers I catch in my garden. Just chuck the bodies up on top of the horse shelters; the hawks swoop down and fly off with them. I've never had a chicken taken by a hawk, even my bantams. There's an aerie with a hawk pair and their young on my hill. Chickens forage all...

    Thoughts on Roosters??

12 hens here, every single one needs to announce they just laid an egg, every day. I think the rooster issues are with roosters crowing all hours, day and night, and the early, early (4:30-5 am) wakeup crowing. That's where I think the neighbors get angry.

    Thoughts on Roosters??

Or the proverbial 'what came first, the chicken or the egg?" Neighbor got tired of losing sleep, rooster owner wouldn't do anything about it. Animal Control got involved, then DA. Rooster owner lost, paid fine.

    Thoughts on Roosters??

I know of 2 people who've been to the DA's office for non-compliance of nuisance crowing cease and desist orders in LA county (worked there way back). You can legally own a rooster, but you can't cause your neighbors to wake up at all hours of the night. Heavy fines for both cases for ignoring...
